He could recite the litany of the missing by rote: Harpalos, who fled after embezzling not once, but three times; Philotas, executed for partaking in an ill-conceived assassination attempt; Kassander, whose jealousy and social ineptitude locked him out of the inner circle; Erygios, felled in battle and honoured as a hero; and the one whose name they had studiously avoided saying in the king’s presence for the past eight months, lest they cause an earthquake to swallow the world.
