Erich Auerbach, de quien la editorial Acantilado acaba de publicar La cicatriz de Ulises, no fue sólo un erudito romanista y crítico literario, sino un intelectual comprometido que en los años que asolaron Europa reivindicó la literatura como una forma privilegiada de entender el mundo y aplacar el odio en la «era de los extremos». Los ensayos y cartas aquí reunidos, escritos entre 1922 y 1952, permiten apreciar la voz del brillante escritor y profundo europeísta tan familiarizado con Homero, la Biblia, Dante y Montaigne como con Marcel Proust, James Joyce y Virginia Woolf. Amigo de Walter Benjamin, huyó de Alemania en 1936 rumbo a Estambul, donde se dedicó a la docencia durante una década, y alcanzó un gran reconocimiento como filólogo en Estados Unidos ya en la postguerra. A través de sus textos en torno al sufrimiento y el sentido de la existencia incluso en períodos de oscuridad, Auerbach examina la construcción de Occidente desde una perspectiva que, al igual que en sus cartas, revela una personalidad luminosa incluso para los lectores actuales.
