Why This Book? - Making Gay History by Eric Marcus
The public library I work at shut down for covid for about a two months back in March. When we weren’t doing curbside or scrubbing the building top to bottom, I spent a lot of the time sewing masks for anyone who wanted one. Seeing as how I took up hand-sewing (specifically quilting) so I could have something to do while listening to podcasts, it stands to reason that’s how I would fill my time while making masks. This is the one that got the most attention during that period.
I first learned about Making Gay History when I was doing my Pride display last year. I was making a pamphlet with resources for learning more, and saw this podcast listed. During my quarantine binging, I learned that all of the sound clips were from Marcus’s book that he published in the early 2000s. This fact then entered the back of my mind and stayed nestled in there until about a month, when Shae and I happened by my favorite bookstore in the Delmar Loop, Subterranean Books. They have a substantial LGBT section, and while they’re only doing curbside right now, I saw this in their window display, pretty reasonably priced at $11.99. I pulled Shae to a stop, called the store, and asked if they could get the copy for me, I was literally on the sidewalk as we spoke. I was ecstatic for the rest of the day, and I cannot wait to crack this baby open.
