In this Viewpoint, Berwick discusses 2 “eras” of the medical profession and offers changes that would be useful to move into a new “moral era.”
Please, if you read nothing else about the future of medicine, read this.
I was fortunate enough to be at the conference where Dr. Berwick first presented these ideas as a speech. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKK-yFn7e_0. I promise it is well worth your time.
Over the last four years I have become cynical about where healthcare is heading. Though I am way too young to be a cynic, even I, as a medical student, can see how we are confusing numbers and reports with good patient care. Just the other day I broke down after a rough patch, wondering if I had picked the wrong profession. What medicine is supposed to be and what it is are starkly different. I went into healthcare for the people; to enjoy relationships and interaction. What I have found is the same cold computer screen that caused me to leave my previous career.
I think the only way we will restore our profession is to strive for Era 3 of medicine. Read and watch the posts above to understand what I mean. Please share this to everyone you can. It is a beautiful vision of what US healthcare can be.
