Painting the Sky Orange — JDW+IJA ; WGM
A small smile tugged at his lips upon feeling her head against his shoulder and her hand in his. There’s absolutely nothing that can compare to that moment, not yet at least; because within the past few days not only has he felt such excitement towards this whole show, he has felt pure happiness. Something that is no stranger to him, though is hard to come by. The man in charge of smiles of his group is also a man who hides behind it the most. Yet with her, everything that holds him down or worries him, vanishes within seconds. He no longer was the little fan boy who cheered her on after every live performance, no. He changed, or his views have at least. She was no longer his idol ideal type, he began seeing her more of his drug, or cure; the only one who can instantly lift his mood just by a simple smile. He shook himself from his own thoughts, waking himself up to the sweetened reality that he now faced.
Marshmallows.
"Ah yah, lucky for you I prepared it already." He whispered back as he nuzzled the tip of his nose onto the top of her head. Not wanting to move around for the fact that he was loving the position they were in, Dongwoo awkwardly reached out his free hand in attempt to grab the container of marshmallows and skewers. After finally reaching it, he sat the box on his lap, opening it with one hand as smile formed upon seeing Jinah’s expression. He carefully placed one of the marshmallows onto a skewer and handed it to her before making one for himself. "Ah unfortunately we didn’t have any crackers or chocolates to make those little snacks they make in American movies; But marshmallows are great plain as well." He commented as he placed the box beside him.
Stealing a glance at the woman, Dongwoo couldn’t help but admire the beautiful smile that graced her lovely features. She was so beautiful. To the world, she is the second most beautiful woman; to him, she is the most beautiful woman. Even if this was all just a show. Even if it was just for pure entertainment, everything about it felt so real. The thought of the show ending instantly began bringing his spirits down, but seeing her smile could only do the opposite. What would happen when all this was over? What if they never make contact again? No. That can’t happen. It won’t happen. Whether it’d be a lunch box given backstage during her promotions, or a simple “good morning” text, there was no way that Dongwoo would let her out of his life completely.
The night was still young, the sun only began setting minutes ago. He didn’t want to ruin such an amazing night with his stupid thoughts. Staring aimlessly at the fire pit in front of him, it wasn’t until then that he realized his marshmallow was completely charred. An embarrassed laugh escaped his lips as he quickly blew out the fire that continued to burn on the now ashy marshmallow. “Aish” He muttered to himself before holding it to Jinah’s lips. “Want it?” He teased, smirking at the disgusted face she made. Reluctantly, he put the charred chunk of sugar between his teeth, pulling it off slowly before quickly chewing on it. His nose scrunched up in disapproval as he swallowed, looking over at the girl who watched in amusement. “Yah, don’t ever eat burnt marshmallows.” Dongwoo placed another marshmallow onto his skewer before holding it out over the pit. His eyes concentrated on the white fluff, watching as it slowly turned a golden brown before quickly pulling it out. “Say ah!” He grinned as he watched her slide it off of his skewer, nodding happily as she gave him the sign of approval.
With the temperature steadily dropping, he worried about the girl, knowing that Jinah hated the cold. He watched her as she seemed completely absorbed in the whole marshmallow burning activity, an amused smile sweeping across his face. He continued to watch her, his hand sneaking over to her waist, pulling her closer into him. He wrapped his arm around her, taking her into his own blanket as his hand rested on her side. “One more marshmallow” he told himself as he watched the color slowly darken. Pulling the marshmallow out of the fire and to his lips, he held it between his teeth as he put the skewer on the ground off to the side. Though this time, instead of biting completely into it, he turned to Jinah and pointed to the other side of the marshmallow. “Let’s share” he attempted to say as he began leaning in towards her lips.Â
Jinah couldn't believe it. Dongwoo really did prepare everything; there couldn't have been a single detail missing. From the fire place to the blankets, lanterns to the marshmallows, everything was more than perfect. The night sky looked beautiful above them; stars twinkled against the dark backdrop, making it look like they were winking at the duo. The scene could only be described as romantic, besides the annoying lights coming from the cameras filming them. She could tell he didn't want to move, just as unwilling as she was.Â
They roasted marshmallows for what felt like hours, mostly in silence. Jinah found that the silences that surrounded them at times were comforting, content, and not at all awkward. They didn't need to talk to be happy in each other's presence, it just happened on it's own accord. After the first marshmallow, only two or three other's turned into a sacrifice for the fire,- not all of them Dongwoo's fault- causing them to erupt into laughter. Instead of eating or tossing them, they tried offering them to the remaining staff, but much to their dismay, none of them were taken no matter how much convincing they tried to do. At that point, it hardly mattered whether they were being filmed; their concerns washed away as the night dragged on.Â
Everything began to settle down and even a few of the cameramen began to drift asleep, their heads nodding against their chests. The fire even began to die down and the bag of marshmallows had to have been dwindling by now. It hardly surprised her when Dongwoo's arm found it's way around her, pulling her against his side and she gratefully leaned against him. She had begun shivering as the night grew colder and it would have been a lie if she said she wasn't tired. Having long put her skewer down, Jinah had settled for watching Dongwoo finish roasting marshmallows, taking turns eating them. It surprised her when he eventually turned to her, her sleepy mind finally registering what he was trying to say.Â
Share. Share the last marshmallow. As in a twist on a pepero kiss? Her eyes flickered towards the cameras, wondering if they were still filming. Thoughts began running through her head; what would the fans say? Is that what he was asking for? Should she? Maybe... Jinah moved towards him, her head tilted to the side. Gazing at him intently, she began nibbling at the end of the marshmallow, inching closer towards him. But just as their lips were about to touch, she paused, her shyness kicking in. Quickly, she pulled away, her hand covering her mouth as she chewed the half a marshmallow, her eyes curving up as she smiled around the mouthful. Without a doubt, it would look like a kiss on camera.Â
Giving another look to Dongwoo, Jinah wondered if he would be hurt by her 'rejection.' To make up for it, she leaned in, pressing a soft peck to his cheek. She smiled warmly, murmuring a simple, "Let's sleep," before turning to lay down, catching his hand to pull him with. Sleeping under the stars could be the only way to end the night. Finally settling under the blankets, Jinah draped a leg across his hips while her head rested on his chest, easily relaxing into the position. She was happy they were able to be so comfortable with each other so fast. They surely would grow a strong bond with each other throughout the few short weeks the show would last.Â
Next thing she knew, she was fast asleep. It must be a habit of hers to just drift off without warning. Luckily, she was a light sleeper and the beginning rays of sunlight easily woke her from her slumber. Lifting her head, she looked out towards the horizon, her sleepy eyes blinking several times before she looked down at her bed partner. "Dongwoo... Dongwoo, wake up..." she whispered, gently nudging him. And then she remembered something. Wasn't he a heavy sleeper? Would she be able to wake him up in time for him to see the rest of the sunrise? A little more frantically, she cooed, "Dongwoo, you're going to miss the sunrise...!"

A smile pulled at his lips as he took her hand into his, lacing his fingers with hers. When she was ready, he opened the front door that led to the hallway, stepping out as he carefully guided her. “Ah of course not. I won’t let you fall for anything else but me.” His infamous machine gun-like laugh slipped from his lips, a bit too amused by his own pun. “I hope you don’t mind surprises though… I think this one will be better than the first one though. But you’re the first girl I’ve ever did this for, so if it’s not romantic or if not something you like… please spare my pride at least.” He laughed once again, except this one was a bit more nervous.
After what seemed like forever, they finally reached the staircase. “Okay, the first step is here, I’ll guide you.” He walked in front of her, turning his back against the staircase as he reached for her vacant hand. Cautiously, he stepped up, watching his own footing before lightly tugging her hands, pulling her up onto the first step as he stepped up to the second. This repeated all the way until they finally reached the top, a wide grin plastered on his lips as he led her through the rooftop door. “We’re here, but keep your eyes closed until we get closer.” In all honesty, he only said that as an excuse to hold her hand longer.Â
Her hand. It was so smooth, so soft. Such a simple action sent millions of butterflies fluttering through the males stomach. Remembering that she was the one to reach out for him only made him smile wider. She wanted to hold his hand. Then again, maybe she only wanted to hold it as a guide so she wouldn’t fall. The thoughts were back and forth, negative to positive, positive to negative. Although Dongwoo didn’t want the moment to be ruined by such stupid thoughts, he did end up coming to a conclusion that she only needed a guide. With a barely audible sigh slipping from his lips, Dongwoo guided her in front of the little camp site before reluctantly letting her hand go.
"Well, you can open it now." A nervous grin formed as he waited for her reaction. The sun was starting to set, signaling the lanterns to automatically switch on. The dimly lit lanterns gave the atmosphere a cozy feeling, not to mention the pillows and blankets did as well. The whole scene was one out of a movie or perhaps even a music video -– music video… damn, he should’ve used this idea while filming "Man In Love," It would’ve been a lot more relevant than his original scenes. His lips formed a more confident grin as he admired his own work before walking over to sit on the pile of blankets, wrapping one around his shoulders.
He looked over at Jinah who was still taking in the scenery before patting the vacant space next to him. “Come sit silly, it’s much warmer over here.” He grinned, the light produced from the flame of the fire danced around along the walls as well as the girl’s figure. She was absolutely stunning. Without even trying, she still had him head over heels. Her beauty was one thing, but the way she spoke, the way she laughed. Everything about her was his soft spot, she was his weakness. Forcing himself to look away, he returned his gaze to the fire pit. “You like it?”Â
Her facade was slowly cracking; it wouldn't be long until she had a permanent smile on her face. And it would be because he put it there. From his silly lines to his laughter, it'd make the bitterest old lady crack a smile and Jinah was definitely not bitter in the slightest. As soon as they reached the staircase, she closed her eyes, batting at and gripping his hands much tighter than necessary as she took each step, trying her best not to wobble or fall. She probably looked like a newborn giraffe trying to walk for the first time; shaky legs lifting, seeking out the next step. But with his guidance, they made it to the top.Â
With his okay, Jinah blinked her eyes open, adjusting to the darker lighting of the rooftop. As soon as the makeshift camp came into view, her entire expression lit up like one of the lanterns hanging around them. She felt like a bad wife, having the thoughts she did earlier. After seeing the hard work he had to have put into this, it didn't surprise her that he had gone missing almost the entire day. She should be more grateful to him and not jump to such wrongful conclusions. From that moment, she made a small vow to herself. To not think wrongly of her new husband, to communicate better if she's upset or curious.Â
The idea was too thoughtful, making Jinah feel undeserving, unworthy. Dongwoo was doing so much for her and she didn't have anything to show her gratitude besides a smile. It made her feel useless, but she hoped there would be a moment that she could redeem herself. She was too busy with her thoughts to notice he had released her hand and went to sit down until he called out to her. Blinking several times, her eyes focused on him, another smile appearing on her lips as she obliged. She pulled her Gomu print blanket tighter around her shoulders before walking over to him and sitting cross-legged next to him.Â
Her eyes slowly trailed towards the fire, scooting closer to him to slip her arm around his as her fingers moved down his arm to meet his. With a quick glance at him, her fingers slid between his as she leaned to the side until her head rested against his shoulder. "It's breathtaking," she whispered quietly; something about the entire scene had her feeling on cloud nine. Nobody had ever done something like this for her before, and despite this only being a variety show of sorts, it made her feel good that Dongwoo was going above and beyond to really impress her. And it was working.Â
She was content. There was no other way to describe what she was feeling. Every now and then when she thought he wasn't paying attention, she would sneak glances at his face, watching how the firelight flickered off his features. He truly was handsome, in more than his own way. She had heard of the stories, how he wasn't normally ranked high for his looks or comments on his height, but Jinah knew there was more to a person than that. His personality was what made him, well, him, and she was glad to see these parts of him that many others didn't get to see. Everything about him made her happy.Â
"You know what would make this even better?" Her voice was soft, careful not to interrupt the peaceful quiet. Brushing her thumb against his, she finally allowed her eyes to meet his, a hint of a smile tugging at the corners of her lips once again. Slowly, her gaze moved back to the fire, murmuring after a pause, "Marshmallows."Â

He was fully aware of how she must be feeling, but he knew he had to keep his mouth shut for the next few hours. It’d be an understatement saying that he felt bad, because well, seeing her this way only made his heart sink further and further. Though of course, he had his reasons. Wanting to be the best thing that ever happened to her, Dongwoo had yet another romantic surprise up his sleeve.Â
His plan was simple: set up a camp on top of the apartment. Romantic isn’t it? Well, the man has been taking grease lessons from his fellow idol member. It’s seemed like hours since he had last spoken to Jinah, which of course, made his heart ache from longing of his new companion; but alas–- he had a mission to complete. With constant reminders to himself of his current objective, Dongwoo had no choice but to disappear from the apartment for a while. Leaving Jinah alone seemed like a risky move, knowing that she would probably be extremely upset, not even willing to see the surprise he had for her. Dongwoo knew this of course, but it was a risk he was willing to take.Â
Dongwoo took a few steps back, admiring his work. He had just finished hanging small, dimly lit lanterns on the laundry lines that surrounded the roof tops perimeter. In the center of the roof sat a large pile of thick blankets and few pillows along with a mini fire pit. As a wide grin began forming, Dongwoo walked over to the fire pit, pulling out a match. “Make sure this doesn’t burn anything.” He told one of the crew members before lighting the match and throwing it in to the pit. With the fire ablaze, his surprise was complete. The only thing missing was Jinah.
Dongwoo slowly entered the couples apartment, his eyes scanning the room for the younger woman. “Nana..” He called out as he made his way to the living room. Upon entering, he felt a lump forming in his throat as his gaze fixed on the woman. He walked over in front of her, turning the television off before kneeling in front of her, his hands resting on her knees. “Yah..” He started, his voice soft and relaxed. “I’m sorry for seemingly neglecting you… I promise that wasn’t my intention though.” A warm smile swept his lips as his gaze met hers. Not wanting to break it, he continued once more. “I have a surprise for you, will you accompany me to the roof top? Though when we get to the stairs, I’m going to have to cover your eyes.”Â
She heard him come in but her eyes never strayed from the screen. Â The television show was pointless, one she wasn't really paying attention to. She wanted to give him the cold shoulder; it was what he had been doing to her all day, wasn't it? A sound of protest caught in her throat when he stepped in front of her, turning the television off but she prevented it from escaping despite her source of distraction being taken away. Forced to look at him instead, she listened intently to what he was saying.Â
His smile was contagious despite how she was feeling on the inside. Gradually, the corners of her lips tugged into a growing smile, feeling ridiculous about herself. How could she think that he'd purposefully ignore her? The viewers were probably laughing at her and her face slowly began to burn in embarrassment. Shoving the thoughts from her mind, she focused on him, nodding slowly. Carefully, she unfolded herself from the couch, taking his hands and pulling him to his feet. "Of course I'll join you," she responded quietly, releasing his hands to catch her blanket and rewrap it around her shoulders.Â
Of course it was another surprise. She should have known better and her embarrassment began to creep back. If she didn't watch herself, tears would soon appear in her eyes before she could stop them, but she managed to keep them held back. "I trust you, Dongwoo-yah," Jinah spoke with a smile, reaching for his hand as she walks over to the door to slip a pair of flats on. "Just don't make me trip on the stairs or anything, okay?" The playful teasing helped lift her mood as they walked down the hallways towards the staircase to the roof.Â

It was useless. It seemed like there was nothing she could do to make Dongwoo pay attention to her. He just seemed too wrapped up in his own thoughts to even notice her. Her efforts were for nothing when he even up and left at one point, leaving her alone in the apartment. Jinah replayed the day in her mind, wondering if there was a point where she could have angered him or annoyed him. The day couldn't have gone any more perfectly for a pair of newlyweds, eating a simple breakfast together, talking over various things in their idol lives. Maybe she had said the wrong thing at some point; that was the only explanation, right?
Maybe he walked out on her and they hadn't bothered to tell her. Would they do that? It couldn't be possible, not when they were monitoring the inside of the apartments as well. She was sure everyone was laughing at her, curled up with a pillow in her arms. The wife without a husband. How humiliating the thought was to her and she sunk further into the couch, wishing she could fall through it. It never occurred to her that Dongwoo could be planning yet another surprise for her.Â
With a soft whine, Jinah tossed the pillow to the side and reached across the couch to grab the remote, flipping on the television to distract herself. Maybe she should call up one of the other couples in the building, but that would only lead to her embarrassment growing if asked where her new husband was. Instead, she grabbed the blanket Japanese Playgirlz had made her with Gomu patterned print on it and wrapped it tightly around her shoulders, focusing on the show that turned on by default. Her only thought now was, would she be alone tonight?
