I like to think that Finn wasn't the defective Stormtrooper but all the others were. I think all the Troopers as apart of the indoctrination were taught what they were doing was right for the galaxy. Finn was the only one that saw through the First Order smoke and mirrors and did the right thing, even if that meant going against his superiors. He remained true to his training but saw who the real enemy was and acted accordingly.
Except that as a stormtrooper, he is. He’s a functioning sentient, but from the perspective of the First Order and what a stormtrooper is supposed to be, he is completely abnormal. Part of him (mine at least) still sees himself through that lens.
Because while he used his training, it isn’t in a trooper’s ‘place’ to see through the smoke and mirrors. They’re not meant to know that there’s any deception at all.
