THE RAIN WILL NOT RELENT. torrential and cold, it has poured for hours, heavy storm clouds shrouding the world in darkness, and reflecting perfectly the dreariness that has infect maurice. seated by the window, he watches what falls within the range of the streetlamps ---- stillness, and cobblestones overrun by wet, allow his eyes to lose focus and his mind to wander to petty slights that represent the larger misery which has overcome his life.though he tries to keep clive from his mind, inevitably the tenure of their secret and aesthetic affair lingers constantly. he wants to close his eyes and become as empty has he feels.

and then, along the street, he catches a flash of movement. a coat, he thinks, or a leg pressing through the street, only catching faint light. alerted suddenly, maurice rises, pressing hands to the cold windowpane as he peers out to see more clearly. what madness might drive anyone to go out in this weather? his compassion is false ---- he only believes it a true ambition as he seizes his dressing gown to cover his pajamas, and jaunts down the stairs to throw open the door. the rain had been muted behind the glass ; it hits him fully now, and in the darkness he must squint to ensure his capture has not disappeared. yes ---- there he is! maurice steps onto his porch and calls out, “ sir! sir, you shouldn’t be out! ”
