a rough little Elias/Ephemer oneshot right before shit hits the fan
=
Ephemer is standing in the middle of Elias' and Angel's living room when the world begins to end.
He and Elias both freeze as they hear murmuring and hurried footsteps outside, the ground beneath them beginning to shake. They exchange a worried look, Ephemerâs easy smile morphing into a tight frown as his blood cools and he realizes - time is up.
His throat dry, he summons his keyblade and gives his friend a serious look. âSorry, Elias, but I think thatâs my cue.â
Eliasâ large, hazel eyes are focused, their expression determined. They step close, looking at Ephemer as if they could see into his soul. That made him nervous at the best of times, but it made things even harder now. âDonât go,â Elias says.
The two of them had been talking for almost an hour now, but these are the first words Elias has spoken to him aloud today. Their voice is firm - itâs a request, but one with the full weight of their heart and their friendship with him behind it.
Ephemer sighs, shakes his head. âI have to do my job, El. The others might need me.â
Elias glances at the large windows built into the side of their house, which now show keyblade wielders running by, heading towards the center of Daybreak Town. They feel a dread thatâs smaller and tamer than the all-consuming terror from their dreams, their memories, but it still feels familiar and sour. They hate it, but when they consider the options thereâs no other choice but to run in and see whatâs happening - particularly if Ephemer is going.
They grab his hand and meet his eyes again, trying to communicate all of this with the limited time they have. âIâll go with you,â they say, their hand tightening on Ephemerâs as he instinctively pulls back.
âListen, I donât know whatâs happening, but I know itâs bad. If you come with me, youâre gonna get hurt again.â
Elias kisses his hand, their expression never wavering.
Ephemer studies them for a moment, perhaps a moment too long. He doesnât know why they still care about him so much, after being stood up and left and lied to and betrayed. After everything theyâve been through, that Ephemer and Skuld and all of them could never protect Elias from.
But he was lucky - he really couldnât imagine doing this without them.
Ephemer sighed again and shifted his hand so that he was holding Eliasâ. âOkay, El. Together.â
Hand in hand, they raced out of the house for the last time.

I had JUST started a khux playlist and then I put my music on shuffle and the first thing to come up is 'See You Again' by Tyler the Creator and like. 'can you give me a kiss? And can you make it last forever? I'm about to go to war and I don't know if I'll see you again' tell me this doesn't remind you of Ephemer/Player or Skuld/Player. I'm currently dead.
thanks! hereâs an angsty/fluffy Kingdom Hearts: Union Chi scene Iâve been wanting to write!
09. â chocolate
Ephemer considered turning back at every moment until he was halfway across Daybreak Town already. He idly swung the bag in his hand as he walked, the various chocolate bars rustling around inside with the movement. He was nervous, probably too nervous for someone as outgoing as him to be visiting a friend. Part of it was just due to how late it was, but then he knew Elias stayed up pretty late, and his own free time was very limited. Most of it, he admitted to himself, was because of all the secrets.
It was for the best that Elias didnât know whatâd happened to their old friends, their old world. That there even was an old world. Ephemer kept telling himself this. If the Dandelions knew, theyâd be devastated, and more vulnerable to the darkness that had taken everything from them. And for Elias, to be a lone survivor...they should never have to feel that pain again. But he knew. He knew somewhere in his heart, they wouldnât want to live in a comforting lie. He probably wouldnât either.
Thatâs why he hesitated, slowing as he reached the street where Elias lived, stopping at the door. Even now he thought of leaving. Maybe he could just leave the bag of candy at the door as a present with no imposition on their time. But what would be more selfish, he wondered? Trying to spend time with them despite the deception, or withdrawing from them due to his own discomfort and fear? Neither was fair, but at least if he talked to Elias when he could they would still have him as a friend.Â
He knocked on the door, quietly enough that hopefully Elias wouldnât hear if they were asleep. There was silence for a moment, and then quiet footsteps approached the front door. The door swung open, creaking quietly, and Elias appeared behind it in their pajamas with disheveled hair. Ephemer began to worry that he had woken them after all, but Elias smiled.Â
âYouâre here,â they said, very quietly. Ephemer felt himself smile, too. Tiredness and worry aside, it was always so good to see them. âIâm here. Did I wake you up?â
Elias shook their head, shrugged. Not really, they seemed to say. Probably they had been sleeping earlier, but not when Ephemer had arrived. He frowned slightly. âAre you okay? Is something wrong?â
Elias shrugged again, glancing away nervously for just a moment before meeting his eyes again. âNothing. Nightmares.â They smiled again, quickly brushing past that statement and stepping back to usher him inside. They closed the door behind him when he entered and led him to the couch where they both sat down in a nest of blankets and pillows that Elias had presumably been residing in when heâd arrived.Â
Ephemer couldnât help glancing around the living room as he sat down. Heâd only been in here a few times since Elias got settled in again, and nothing much had changed in that time. Heâd never seen much of Eliasâ house at all; he just knew that they used to live with other people. Friends. Friends that were gone now, and that Elias wouldnât remember. He compared it in his mind to his own old Union houses, and it seemed so empty and quiet. He had a mind to encourage Elias to get another roommate, but he didnât know how to bring it up organically or who would be a good fit. That would have to be a discussion for another time.
He set his bag on the floor and turned to face Elias more, idly rubbing the back of his neck. âDid you want to talk about your nightmares?â
Elias stared at their hands for a long moment, fidgeting with a corner of one of their blankets. Eventually they shook their head, lips pressed tight together.
Ephemer nodded. âOkay. Then tell me something fun. Whatâve you been up to?â
Elias brightened. They held up a finger to say âwaitâ and then took off, leaving the couch and heading upstairs. They returned shortly with a book in one hand and a sleepy Chirithy under their other arm. They sat back down, depositing Chirithy on the couch between them and Elias, and opened the book to show Ephemer a page of sketches.Â
The sketches were of flowers from the various gardens and flowerbeds around Daybreak Town, mostly marigolds. Ephemer felt himself smile, thinking of their first meeting in Waterfront Park as he recognized a bright blue pansy among one of the few colored flowers on the page. âThese are really nice, Elias. Theyâre great.â
Elias smiled and closed the book. âIâve only done a few,â they explained, signing. âIâll try dandelions next.âÂ
Ephemer didnât quite know if that should make him smile or frown, but Elias had moved on to the next thought already. They pointed to the bag at his feet and gave him a questioning smile, all while hugging their cuddly Chirithy to their side.Â
Ephemer handed them the bag. âItâs for you. Itâs why I asked you what kind of candy you like. I knew youâve been down a lot lately, so I got you some of your favorite chocolates.â
He watched a warm smile spill over his friendâs face as they opened the bag and looked in, and then suddenly they reached over and hugged him. Ephemer was surprised, suddenly squished against Elias with their arms around him, Chirithy snuggled somewhat awkwardly between them, but it was nice. He had needed this, he thought, and by the way Elias clung to him for several moments, so had they.Â
When they sat back, he imagined he could see the shadow of those nightmares in their expression still, but it was fading for now. He knew neither of them could make the pain or the fear go away completely, but it could be made to retreat for a moment, and that was worth it. Because in those moments, they could enjoy quiet comforts like this: sitting with a friend late at night, stocking up on chocolate, and a half asleep Chirithy curled next to you. It might not always be enough, but it helped.Â

I know Ephemer's relationship with the player isn't necessarily romantic I just really ship them...I especially ship him with Elias... I love a m/nb ship that's pure and good and based on friendship and cooperation and honesty (well. to a certain point on that last one.)
Don't mind me I'm just thinking about Ephemer talking and being adorable and Elias just listening with their chin on their hands and a big grin bc he's so cute c:
And then they sign to him about what they've been doing lately and their Chirithy excitedly adds to the story but honestly it's just nice to be around him again and to know he made time for THEM.
