zhou fei runs around completely unadorned save for her saber or sword--and the necklace of the carved wooden sword xie yun gave her, and now the bracelet he made for her.
the show does get very scooby doo ish in this last third, what with all the disha constantly being outsmarted by a group of kids
hallucinating him calling her *his* a'fei! god!
it's so interesting, cause all this romantic development between them is happening while they're separated. zhou fei misses him so much, and she's going to such great lengths to save his life, and even as they're separated, the romantic interaction between them doesn't stop because she dreams of him--so even as they're apart, her thoughts of him keep her company, keep her from being lonely. her thoughts of him actually accelerate their romantic relationship, cause he's never called her *his* a'fei, he's never caressed her face, but while she's away from him she imagines him doing these things, and so when they meet again face to face, instead of being distant because of their time apart, they will be even closer than they were before she left him. like!!! genius choices re: the writing for their romantic relationship. and their increased romantic proximity upon their reunion will be the direct result of her desire for him, a desire that she both recognizes for herself and expresses to others.
also that one of the reasons (imo) the show has xie yun get sick and basically takes him out of commission for this stretch of time is precisely so he doesn't take the story over from zhou fei, the way sifeng did in love and redemption when he found out xuanji was the devil star and then the story basically disappeared her for an entire arc (/the rest of the show, basically).
here xie yun falls sick and so zhou fei gets to (continue to) act without his secret past threatening to take over her story. she doesn't even hear about his royal past from him, she hears it from his monk adoptive dad and from her own dad, and when he does tell her about his past it's first indirectly through the poems/stories he composes and then as an excuse he uses to try to convince her to let him die--that's how dedicated the story is to making sure it stays hers. it would be *so easy* for this to turn into royal and military intrigue to get xie yun onto the throne or something, for that to be The Point (like chasing jade), but it resists it at every chance both through *and for* zhou fei. and it reminds me of what xie yun said, that the common people don't care who's on the throne, so long as they get to live their lives well.
best performances in this show are changyu, her adoptive parents, uncle wei, and the emperor. like i remember guy playing the emperor being the lackey/brother support role in dream of splendor, and he does such a great job here of giving us comedy and a kind of repulsive pathetic-ness. he does everything really broad but makes it believable for the character's situation and within the tonal scope of the show. i know he'll never be a lead in an idol drama cause people want to fuck their tv screens but i hope he gets more and more work and some good lead roles in non idol dramas.
