“Spending time outdoors has taught me so much about the importance of self-care. The work I do as an environmental educator can be emotionally, mentally and physically draining. Teaching is my passion but it is definitely not for everyone. Being able to connect people of color to nature in their community is very rewarding because they get to experience the outdoors on a deeper level. Time outdoors slows you down, you can relax more, and focus on being in the moment.
As educators we have to wear many hats...social worker, parent, mentor, scientist, and so on. But who is taking care of me? Why nature of course! She is my confidant, my therapist, my sanctuary. I am completely healed from the stresses of life when I'm outdoors and that allows me to continue the work I love so much. I am thrilled to participate in Fresh Tracks because it provides us with unique and meaningful stories that connect communities to one another through their love for the outdoors.” -Nicole Jackson, Environmental Educator, Natural Leader for the Natural Leaders Network, Outdoor Afro Leader
