What is an absolute phrase?
Today, we are taking a look at English Grammar. And we’re going to study a bit about absolute phrases.
An absolute phrase consists of a noun or pronoun, a participle and any modiifers.
These phrases provide additional details to the sentence.
For example: Leonard, his heart beating rapidly, asked his mother if he was in trouble.
The absolute phrase is ‘his heart being rapidly’. the Noun being ‘heart’ and participle being ‘beating’.
These phrases can come at the beginning, middle or end of sentences but they can not cannot to the rest of the sentence by a conjunction. Instead, these sentences are connected by (a) comma (s). ‘
Some examples using the same sentence:
His heart beating rapidly, Leonard asked his mother if he was in trouble.
Leonard, his heart beating rapidly, asked his mother if he was in trouble.
Leonard asked his mother if he was in trouble, his heart beating rapidly.
