Their eyes were still locked. Tension snarled around them, but different to that Latrell was accustomed to. Not sparking or electric, but pulling, a sort of artificial gravity folding them together, as elastic and fathomless as the stretching silence.
Latrell wondered if he was about to be plunged into a featureless white expanse.
He wondered if Nox was just going to walk out of the room.
He wondered what Nox would do if he stepped forward, lessened the distance between them.

Nox looked away, ducked down to the couch. Latrell blinked as the jingle of keys cut through the silence, Nox flipping Ralph’s shiny set around his finger once.
“C’mon,” he said, meeting Latrell’s eyes again. “I wanna show you something.”
