THE BATTLE DRUM - SAARA EL-ARIFI Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐⭐️⭐
Saara El-Arifi, I hate you a little bit. Writing a book that is so good and ending it like that. Now I must wait so long to find out what happens next, and I’m in pain.
In all seriousness, The Battle Drum (the second book of The Ending Fire Trilogy) was so riveting and so painful. Anoor, Sylah, and Hassa, my beloveds are all back, and all the POV characters included in this book were so enlightening. Without spoilers, this book had so many revelations and new mysteries. Saara does such an amazing job with worldbuilding. Like The Final Strife, this was a five-star read for me. A very satisfying middle book in a trilogy. Thank you to Random House for the eARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Final Strife – Saara El-Arifi
This was so much fun. The magic is so good. Like, so fucking good. Sometimes, fantasy racism feels kind of just frustrating and has the likelihood of me just putting it down if it is bad enough. But, the caste system in this one is really neat. I liked the representation of disabilities (in the Ghostings) though it is fucking horrifying that the Embers do that to people. (Let’s be honest though, the ruling class will always find ways to punish minorities and sometimes that includes maiming their children.) Sylah felt very Chosen One to me, but I don’t really think that’s bad in this case. Anoor and Sylah going in to the trials as both enemies and allies was was a lot of fun and the tension going through the story between them was really good. I am trying to get my hands on the next one immediately. I liked it and the characters so much.
