It was a strange creature, huddled, pale skinny limbs wrapped close in an effort to keep warm. It was small wonder, the little thing was probably freezing. No scales, fur, hair, hide or even feathers to offer any sort of warmth.
“What isss it?” My reptilian comrade hissed, forked tongue sliding over his teeth.
“Human.” I replied, claws clinking against the bars in absent thought.
“Humanssss?” the scales of his face shifting into a translation of surprise. “I thought them gone many yearsss, none left.”
“Apparently not.”
For yes, it had been thought that the plagues and wars had whipped them out nearly two hundred years past, but apparently that was not the case.
“How much for the ....” I gestured, not sure what human fledglings were called, for surely such a pitiful creature could not be fully grown.
“Forty” the hovering vendor declared.
“Done.”
His face dropped, immediate regret at not having placed the price higher, having expected a barter, to be haggled down. But I was no fool, I knew there wouldn't be another of this species coming to these parts in the near future, perhaps not ever. Best to take advantage of such a blatant opportunity.
