Golden Idea
In the early hours of driving down the road, Howard felt an enormous sense of self worth. The path he headed was one that he thought was the coolest. His friends also confirmed that he was on his way to awesomeness. The problem was, he couldn't remember what he was headed towards. He had hyped up the journey so much, that when he woke from the stupor of the idea, he found he couldn't remember all that was talked and thought about.
The sun was coming up on the the horizon behind him. It peaked below the low hanging rain clouds that seemed to follow him. Distracted momentarily by the beauty of the sun hitting the rain, his thoughts wandered to the rainbow now formed brightly in front of his car. He imagined a big pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, where it disappeared into the empty fields on either side of the highway.
The more he thought of the gold, the faster he drove. Nothing could cure him of his desire for the precious metal he thought he could see at the end of the illusion. He figured he could just drive faster to get to it. The pot was just several hundred yards away, and seemed to keep pace with his speed.
Just as the sun rose enough to begin its ascent above the clouds, the rainbow also began to lose it’s ends touching the ground. Howard pulled to the side of the road and stared at the empty fields hoping for the gold to suddenly reappear.
