Wraith stared at the scene before her, calculating their next move. With the way the ring had cut off, they were essentially trapped; lava acting as a physical barrier, preventing them from crossing to where they needed to go. Their squad was already down a member, but that didn’t phase her at all – Bloodhound was more than capable of clenching the victory alongside her, a third person almost unnecessary. It was simple. They were her eyes, and she was their mobility.
“… I know how we can do this. But, you’re going to have to trust me.” She threw a glance over to the masked Legend, looking for confirmation.
The only way for them to get to the next ring was to go through the lava.
She double-checked her portal energy, before scanning the area, looking for a good ending point for her ultimate.
Wraith followed the voice’s guidance, eyes honing in on a ledge across the lava. It was kinda far, but doable. She would barely make it, if she played her cards right.
“See that patch of ground over there? It’s in the ring – I think I can reach it.” She pointed in its direction. “I just have to portal you over there, and phase to avoid the lava. Seems easy enough.”
Wraith gave Bloodhound a playful smirk, wordlessly conveying to the hunter she was joking. Of course it wouldn’t be easy. Was she going to do it anyway? Hell yeah. Her heart was already racing from the thought of walking over lava, the adrenaline kicking as she took a few steps back from the scorching river.
Directing her hand behind herself, she opened a portal, and took a running start.
Heat crawled up her skin as she approached the end of the basalt rock bed, unpleasant and suffocating as she lept into the air, over the molten flow.
Just before she touched down and burnt her feet, she phased –
– and the heat disappeared.
A chill that seeped beneath her skin and down into her bones took its place, the polar opposite of what could have been if she’d messed up her timing. Thankfully, she’d done this one too many times, and it came as second nature.
The lava beneath her feet was sticky, threatening to suck her shoes into the ground and trap her in place, but she kept up her pace, smoothly running over the surface. It was stable enough to walk over, at least, being a thicker flow that cooled as it was exposed to air.
She hopped to safety just as her phase ended, and went up a ways to ensure the portal was in a safe spot for her squadmate.
