Prince Albert & Queen Victoria's Descendants Part I

Prince Albert and Queen Victoria had nine children. Their eldest daughter Victoria, Princess Royal married Prince Frederick of Prussia, later Frederick III, German Prince on 25 January 1858.

Through this line, Prince Albert and Queen Victoria had 8 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 38 great-great-grandchildren, 86 great-great-great-grandchildren (3x), 155 great-great-great-great-grandchildren (4x), and 127 great-great-great-great-great-grandchildren (5x).

Their descendants include King Felipe IV of Spain, the late King Constantine II of Greece, Crown Prince Alexander of Yugoslavia, and Prince Georg Friedrich of Prussia (the current Head of the House of Hohenzollern).

The Princess Frederick visited her parents from 21 May to 2 June 1859. It was the first time she had been back to England since her wedding in January 1858. On the last night of her stay she attended a concert in the Ball Room at Buckingham Palace. Queen Victoria described the night in her journal entry for that day and describes her daughter as looking "lovely & regal".

Aunt Mary Teck and May are staying with me for a couple of days. May has your rooms, it is always a pang for me to see anyone else in them, but you will not mind May using them, I know how much you like her. It is indeed pleasant to have them, especially as everyone here says May is your image. She is so sweet and charming and sensible, and her being like my Sophie drew me towards her.

Queen Victoria and family at Coburg on 21 April 1894, assembled for the wedding of Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1876-1936) and Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse (1868-1937), both grandchildren of Queen Victoria. The wedding took place on 19 April 1894.

The group includes members of the Prussian and Russian royal families. This photograph was acquired by Queen Victoria to be part of her series of albums titled 'Portraits of Royal Children'. She is surrounded by descendants from across Europe, assembled for the wedding of Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (the daughter of Queen Victoria's son, Alfred) and the Grand Duke of Hesse (the son of Queen Victoria's daughter, Alice). Sitting the with the Queen is her eldest daughter Victoria, now Dowager Empress of Germany, with her eldest son, Kaiser Wilhelm II. The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia are also in the group. Nicholas and Princess Alexandra of Hesse, standing next to him, had announced their engagement on 20 April 1894.

The photograph represents Queen Victoria's position as the 'grandmother' of Europe, at the moment before family alliances began to collapse and Europe eventually erupted into war in 1914. Queen Victoria wrote in her journal for 21 April 1894, 'the whole of our large family party were photographed by English, as well as German photographers. Many groups were taken, & some of me with Vicky & my 3 sons, & William.'
