in march 1939, joseph p. kennedy sr is sent to the vatican as fdr’s representative to attend the coronation of pope pius xii. the ambassador defies protocol and insists on bringing his entire family. they took so many seats that, at first, there’s no where for mussolini’s foreign minister to sit. it nearly sparks a diplomatic incident.

a few days later, during a private mass for the kennedys, seven year old teddy receives his first communion from the new pope. both rose and ted will remember it as one of the high points of their lives.
