I love Quinn's bright red spine + tendrils. it makes me think of a strange, rarely seen, dangerous deep sea creature.
can you talk more about the lore for it, or your intentions when you designed the spine?
HI! Thankyou for the kind words!
Quinn's thaumaturgical restraint is inspired by a few things, but most prominently ww1 barbed wire/million knives from trigun, and animals trapped in fencing/nets. I wanted something visually distinct, and I wanted Quinn to grapple with the struggles and grief of chronic pain/chronic conditions and how mortal it is to feel constant pain, and suffer with no clear answer or solution . With so many elders around him, Quinn has not been able to find long term relief or even remove the thing. He drags it around.
I wanted this to mirror the experience so many chronically ill/chronic pain folks experience, myself included. That even the best doctors often can't do anything, barely understand what you're going through and even finding a simple relatively mid term balm is a nightmare. How depressing it is, how much of a strain it takes on your body and your mind to be in constant pain and having little to no clear pathway or even the hope of being healed. Being constantly told to seek something else out only to meet shattering disappointment.
Kind of a literal metaphor/stand in for chronic illnesses/pain as well as just some good old fashioned Human Weapon (kindred in this case) traits. Being reduced to an attack dog for a sect you fight against.
I also wanted to explore how one might weaponise a serial diablerist's diableries against them, use them as a point of control.
The lore is that it was developed as a secondary restraint to contain my redlist serial diablerist Quinn . Who had a trophy from clan Ventrue to bring him in alive. He was first captured around 2015, after his return from the Gehenna Crusade, where the Red Alastor began to debrief and seek to contain him as he awaited trial.
The below being the 'first edition of the restraint' where it was painful yes, but the pronged collar was relatively easily broken, more focus on disciplines being muted.
Quinn escaped Late 2016, humiliating Sulla- the alastor in charge quite significantly. Still, Sulla began to formulate a much different plan than just wasting Quinn's unique talents. So, he delayed his capture, sending many an archon to die to prolong the hunt and conceal any failures that might hinder his reputation.
He began to work- in collaboration with several Tremere, Lucinde, and even a Tzimisce on an entirely new restraint. Something that could not only contain Quinn but control him, make him suffer near constantly, and work in tandem with his disciplines and beast itself. A cruel addition being that it was designed specifically for a serial diablerist who's crimes welled near a hundred. Not just to power it, but to form a potent weapon and control. Finally , Sulla intended it not to be removed, that should Quinn escape, he would drag this where he went, he would suffer through out.
Quinn was recaptured in early 2024 enduring a year long torture at the hands of Sulla, the restraint being forced into his spine at the night of his capture, wrapping his limbs. The restraint in itself is kind of a living thing, attuned specifically to quinn and fused with his beast, giving a lot of unpleasant compulsions and hungers. Quinn was broken free in early 2025, with the Aid of a ventrue Named Vincent (who is written/ owned by my friend Bean ) and many others. Vincent managed to 'break' the mechanism enough for it to unfurl, re-initialising to be a little bit more in tandem to Quinn, though the excrutiating pain remained.
Many troubling revelations have come since, that it's possible Sulla let him escape or expected/intended him to. That he programmed more than a few things- like remote detonation with the intent of Quinn causing Masquerade incidents on a global scale.
Ultimately, Sulla wants to make a human/kindred weapon out of Quinn, to control his body and use his elder disciplines to hunt for the Camarilla's causes. Quinn is presently on the run from this, though has a sinking feeling in his chest for how long he can outrun and fight against something he has no will to.
