A review of PHILIPPINE CONTEMPORARY AESTHETICS by Alice G. Guillermo
In this review I will focus in the alternative materials that guillermo said, I didnβt agree on what she said that the urban artists realized that they need to move away in the dependence of our artists in other countries maybe the artists in the rural areas but not the urban artists. As far as I see, majority of the artists here in urban especially the young ones continuously using the materials came from the other countries. I think this is also one of the reason why the arts that came from our country donβt have standards simply because the materials that we are using came from other country like in western part. I could not just blame all the artists that using those kind of material, whether we deny it or not the products or materials that came from other country are very good to use in arts unlike ours that we cannot find them in a typical art store, you will need to travel in near provinces for you to find the things that you needed and one more thing that I observe in our country or maybe in others also, when the product is environment friendly or just came from the plant or wherever, itβs expensive. I salute the artists that using the indigenous materials they know the art of conservatism and they have a lot time to find those kinds of materials and the others that using the materials came from other country they maybe find it cool to use or thatβs just their choice to use we canβt do anything about that. As for me, maybe we could use or try the indigenous materials aside from the fact the we can help our fellowmen, we can also introduce those to our fellow artists and most especially we can help to conserve our culture.Β
