Eugene Chadbourne with Duck Baker and Randy Hutton, 'The Guitar Trio in Calgary 1977: Concert and Studio Recordings' CD (Emanem)
Tuesday, August 10, 2021, 8:10pm (partial listen)
Had a quick listen to the first third or so of this album that I have yet to get all the way through fully, despite the fact that it's of particular interest to me, being birthed in my hometown and issued on one of the most important free improv labels ever. If one is familiar with EC, the musical contents here will not be unfamiliar, and DB is not an unknown quantity, so it is the presence of relatively unhearalded guitarist RH that makes this one truly interesting. I know his playing through an excellent Onari album called 'Ringside Maisie', and he was apparently an important figure in Calgary avant-garde scenes well before my time, but I will have to do a more concentrated listen to fully parse what he's doing here.

Paul Rutherford â In Backward Times (Emanem)
Thereâs nothing quite like the late trombonist Paul Rutherfordâs approach to improvisation than one row from an ear of corn. Â Like the kernels of varying shapes and sizes that remain recognizable, Rutherfordâs work presents a sonic unity in the face of staggering diversity and invention. Â Each tone, half-tone and other namelessly unique gestures obviously spring from the same wellspring of creativity while avoiding the crutches of constantly recurrent pattern needed by lesser improvisers to avoid a fall on the proverbial face. Â New confirmation of Rutherfordâs still underappreciated genius is always welcome, and it can be shown in no better light than on this new chronologically diverse but musically unified disc.
