Scrolling Pinterest got me thinking about whatās missing from our weekends
Saturday mornings in Elsmere are kind of perfect in their own quiet way. The sun filters through the neighborās big maple tree, birds are doing their thing, and the streetās still calm before lawnmowers and leaf blowers start up. My partner and I usually sip coffee on the back steps, which sounds sweet in theory⦠but in practice, itās kind of uncomfortable. Just a few concrete slabs, no shade, nowhere to really relax.
Itās not that our backyard is bad. Itās just unfinished. Like a sentence missing punctuation.
Lately, Iāve been dreaming about turning it into something more ā not just a yard, but a space we actually use.
šļø The Challenge: From Bare to Beloved
Weāve talked about adding a deck for a couple years now, but it always felt like a āsomedayā thing. The kind of project you start after the bathroom reno, after you repaint the living room, after life stops being so busy. But something changed this spring.
Maybe itās how much time weāve been spending at home. Or maybe itās the fact that our friends down the block just put in a killer pergola setup and now every hangout ends with someone saying, āWeāve got to do something like this.ā
Our yard isnāt huge, and thereās a little bit of a slope to contend with ā plus the usual Delaware drainage quirks. I kept wondering: Is this even doable?
š» The Scroll: Where the Ideas Started
Thatās when I came across this local page from Prime Decks Delaware all about their Elsmere installations. Honestly? It felt weirdly spot on. They talked about Elsmereās terrain and zoning like theyāve lived here forever (maybe they have?), and I felt like I was finally reading something that fit.
Not just general advice about āelevating your outdoor space,ā but things like how to work with sloped yards, how composite decking can handle Delawareās humid summers and icy winters, and even the benefits of privacy screens ā which, hello, yes please. Our neighbors are lovely, but I wouldnāt mind a little less⦠visibility.
What I appreciated most? The way they framed decks not as a āconstruction projectā but as a livable space. Like: Where will you have your Sunday coffee? Where will the dog nap in the shade? Whereās the best angle for string lights?
šŖµ What It Got Me Thinking About
I started sketching. Again. But this time, I included actual features: a bench that wraps around one corner, a step-down platform for a little portable fire pit, some built-in planters for lavender and rosemary (because why not?).
I love the idea of using composite decking ā something I hadnāt really considered before. Less maintenance is definitely a win. And Iād never thought about integrated lighting before, but now I canāt stop imagining how pretty that would look at dusk.
There was also something comforting in the fact that Prime Decks handles everything ā permits, layouts, the stuff Iād 100% get overwhelmed by if I tried to DIY this with a friend and a YouTube video.
They seem to know Elsmereās quirks ā the tight driveways, the fence line negotiations, the way one yard might be dry as a bone and the next turns into a swamp after a thunderstorm.
šø Where Weāre At Now
Weāre not hammering anything yet, but the conversation feels real now. Weāve actually walked the yard and started measuring. Weāre budgeting. Weāre dreaming in possibilities, not just Pinterest pins.
The hope is to build something simple, maybe even this fall, that can grow with us ā a place for dinners, naps, lazy Sundays. A space that invites people outside and makes being home feel like vacation at home.
And when weāre ready, I think I know who to call. Iām keeping that Elsmere page bookmarked.
