Scrolling Pinterest got me thinking about whatâs missing from our weekends
Saturday mornings in Elsmere are kind of perfect in their own quiet way. The sun filters through the neighborâs big maple tree, birds are doing their thing, and the streetâs still calm before lawnmowers and leaf blowers start up. My partner and I usually sip coffee on the back steps, which sounds sweet in theory⌠but in practice, itâs kind of uncomfortable. Just a few concrete slabs, no shade, nowhere to really relax.
Itâs not that our backyard is bad. Itâs just unfinished. Like a sentence missing punctuation.
Lately, Iâve been dreaming about turning it into something more â not just a yard, but a space we actually use.
đď¸ The Challenge: From Bare to Beloved
Weâve talked about adding a deck for a couple years now, but it always felt like a âsomedayâ thing. The kind of project you start after the bathroom reno, after you repaint the living room, after life stops being so busy. But something changed this spring.
Maybe itâs how much time weâve been spending at home. Or maybe itâs the fact that our friends down the block just put in a killer pergola setup and now every hangout ends with someone saying, âWeâve got to do something like this.â
Our yard isnât huge, and thereâs a little bit of a slope to contend with â plus the usual Delaware drainage quirks. I kept wondering: Is this even doable?
đť The Scroll: Where the Ideas Started
Thatâs when I came across this local page from Prime Decks Delaware all about their Elsmere installations. Honestly? It felt weirdly spot on. They talked about Elsmereâs terrain and zoning like theyâve lived here forever (maybe they have?), and I felt like I was finally reading something that fit.
Not just general advice about âelevating your outdoor space,â but things like how to work with sloped yards, how composite decking can handle Delawareâs humid summers and icy winters, and even the benefits of privacy screens â which, hello, yes please. Our neighbors are lovely, but I wouldnât mind a little less⌠visibility.
What I appreciated most? The way they framed decks not as a âconstruction projectâ but as a livable space. Like: Where will you have your Sunday coffee? Where will the dog nap in the shade? Whereâs the best angle for string lights?
𪾠What It Got Me Thinking About
I started sketching. Again. But this time, I included actual features: a bench that wraps around one corner, a step-down platform for a little portable fire pit, some built-in planters for lavender and rosemary (because why not?).
I love the idea of using composite decking â something I hadnât really considered before. Less maintenance is definitely a win. And Iâd never thought about integrated lighting before, but now I canât stop imagining how pretty that would look at dusk.
There was also something comforting in the fact that Prime Decks handles everything â permits, layouts, the stuff Iâd 100% get overwhelmed by if I tried to DIY this with a friend and a YouTube video.
They seem to know Elsmereâs quirks â the tight driveways, the fence line negotiations, the way one yard might be dry as a bone and the next turns into a swamp after a thunderstorm.
đ¸ Where Weâre At Now
Weâre not hammering anything yet, but the conversation feels real now. Weâve actually walked the yard and started measuring. Weâre budgeting. Weâre dreaming in possibilities, not just Pinterest pins.
The hope is to build something simple, maybe even this fall, that can grow with us â a place for dinners, naps, lazy Sundays. A space that invites people outside and makes being home feel like vacation at home.
And when weâre ready, I think I know who to call. Iâm keeping that Elsmere page bookmarked.
