i should do a writeblr intro at some point but that might also detract from my āhorror that lives under your bed and leaves esoteric paragraphs scratched into your walls during the nightā vibe
like not to be dramatic or anything (fully intending to be dramatic) but i had my first ultrasound yesterday and my BABY has a HEARTBEAT, watch me kick-flip my way through the entire spectrum of human emotion for the next several days
putting thought into the recurring themes in my writing is a trip because thereās no way to be like āso you know that Mountain Goats song that, on the surface, is about eating jam straight out of the jar but then you look deeper and itās like, āhey man that jar is full of blood. hey man life is too short. hey man the existential dread might consume me if i stop eating my ājamā out of the jar.ā? yeah itās like that.ā how do i explain that coherently? how do i say āyeah my writing is kind of a jam jar full of blood and the yearning for human connectionā

For the WIP title meme-- Omg you have so many great titles! It was so hard to choose, but I have to go with the first one you listed-- inscriptions on photographs we havenāt burned yet
It's so haunting! I am dying to know more.
(If I get to be greedy, Iām also super interested in, do not give your hair to birds, do not turn your heart to sea foam.)
I talked about do not give your hair to birds a little bit here, kudos to you for rooting out the two on the list that are nearest to my heart omg thank you so much for giving me an excuse to be rabid about them
OKAY, that said, of all of the titles on the list Inscriptions might be my favorite (biased opinion since this was my comfort project during a roughhhhh year)
so, it started out as two separate novels: Cassette Tapes for the Apocalypse (written in 2016, a dark comedy post-apocalyptic novel) and Sudden Oak Death (written in 2020, a character-driven mythological tragedy)āIn 2022 I took the pieces I liked the most from the two books (the character dynamics of cassette tapes, the world building of oak death) and fused them together.
SUMMARY:
All hail the wrath of the gods. Witness the death of humanity. Rah-Rah-Rah.
Echo Lalia is a liar. Echo Lalia is a survivor. She watched the pantheon try and try again to snuff humanity out under its boot. She watched humanity turn on the gods and claw them from their thrones even as the fever burned them from the inside out. She watched. She only watched, because Echo Lalia is a survivor and rule number one of survival is to keep other peopleās shit off of your shoes.
sheās also a demi-god that might be on the run from what remains of the pantheon. maybe sheās also directly working with the godling thatās directly responsible for humanity rotting around them. maybe, just maybe, her lies catch up with her and wrap around her throat.
maybe echo has to fight for her freedom when the consequences of her (in)actions catch up with her.
Itās a character driven dark comedy with heavy themes of found-family and the lengths people will go to for security, as well as generational trauma and breaking the cycle of abuse etc. etc. + all that fun stuff.
BONUS: echoās photo taking is a background feature in the plot and integral to her ārunning from the pastā themes SO each chapter is named after a specific inscription ON one of her photos (my title was not overly creative) eventually they'll all be illustrated as the chapter headings, some of my favorites under the cut
the (unfinished) character portraits ^
+ favorite photo headings ^
aaaaand, an excerpt:
inscriptions on photographs we haven't burned yet. ch I, s I:
Leandra Vahara is dead and itās all Jowan Vaharaās fault.
Itās always Jowan Vaharaās fault, except when itās Millicent or Kieran Vaharaās fault. There are some precious, precarious days when itās Amel or Amikus or Amelia Worthingtonās fault instead, but when the blame is laid that way it dances too close to things best left buried. It could be Mercury Landerās fault, depending on when the story starts, or Maud Amberlingās, depending on where the story ends.
It is never, never, never Echo Laliaās fault. Nothing is ever Echo Laliaās fault.
HERE are two universal truths: Leandra Vahara is dead and it is not Echo Laliaās fault. Leandra Vahara is dead and Echo is the one who carved and bludgeoned and snuffed the light from her eyes.
HERE is a fact about the death of Leandra Vahara: it was ill-advised and impossible.
HERE are Echoās favorite words in the English language: ill-advised. Impossible.
Listen man, itās not like she did it just to prove that she could, Leandra really just had to die. It was necessary. More than anything else, it was necessary.
