If Eli lost their brother, they’d be devastated, and they’re completely frantic when he goes missing out of Michigan without a trace. They don’t know what to do or who to be or who they are. They’d be able to pick themselves up off the ground, though. Never finding out what happened to James makes them sick, and they never stop looking.
But if James lost them, he’d lose the one thing that made sense to him. Because without Eli, it’s just the bloodied mess of war, the shards of a broken family, and the soul sucking demons. Without Eli, all that’s left is darkness in a world that asks way too fucking much of him and I don’t know that he could bear that all alone. With his mom drinking and him believing it’s his fault for not standing up for the family more to his dad, with his dad using him as his mouthpiece and as a messenger boy to carry all of his burdens for him, with his baby sister out there somewhere he feels he must have failed to adequately protect and shield from all the bullshit, and his best friend of a sibling, the heart of the family, now lying dead because he decided they should know about all the shit, too?
That’s just too fucking much for him. He’d be unable to cope with that. He’d lose himself, the softness, the sadness to numbness and anger. And it would be dangerous.
I should probably make a verse where that happens tbh... B/c James is definitely the one that disappears off the face of the Earth to practically never be seen again, but James without his Heart is too interesting of a concept to NOT explore.
