School has started up again. People have lists of questions that they ask new acquaintances, conversation starters that you use to gauge how good of friends you’ll be: what’s your major? What music do you like? What do you do for fun? Times like these are when I always end up talking about the novels that I've written or am writing.

And you guys? I sucked three people into my writing in one day. That’s three new people who wanted to read my book, three new perspectives and three new takes on your writing.

All because I ranted about my work to them for a minute.

Talking to everyone about your writing has that obvious advantage: you could convince someone to read your work. But there’s some more, less obvious advantages to getting into this habit.

You get to practice your “elevator pitch.” If you aren’t familiar with the term, an “elevator pitch” is a term used in the publishing industry to describe a summary of your book that takes about thirty seconds to explain. The idea is that if you‘re riding an elevator with someone, you should be able to explain your book to them within that time.

Doing this is hard! We’re so passionate about our work that we could talk for hours. Condensing year’s worth of work into thirty seconds of explanation is tough. But it’s a good skill to have, and when you’re in a casual conversation with someone who has asked “What’s your book about?”... Let’s just say it’s good to have a quick explanation on hand.

Just for a quick example, my elevator pitch goes something like this:  “So it’s about this eccentric scientist, right? And she’s really concerned for the natural world. She knows the ice caps are melting, she knows about global warming, she’s wants to fix it. So her solution, because she’s super smart and has access to stem cells, is to biologically engineer a kid with the power to manipulate water. She raises this kid, but then teenage rebellion comes around, and she runs away.” (Read on Wattpad here!) I usually devolve into rambling about the other characters if I have more time with someone, or I just leave it there with a simple “And then the plot goes on from there.”

Bringing up the fact that you write can really boost the faith you have in yourself. Every time you explain what you write about and somebody responds positively, you’re going to feel good! Even if they’re just nodding along and smiling, a positive reaction is really encouraging. 

You can find other writers! Taking the first step and revealing to that other person that “Oh, I write,” usually encourages them to share their own writing with you. This gives you irl writer friends as well as Internet writer friends, and we all know that the more writer friends you have, the better.

On a related note, you might get something new to read out of it! Reading your new friend’s work in exchange for them reading yours is an excellent way of going about things.

Not to mention that rambling about your own writing can be really fun if the person is willing to listen.

So don’t be afraid to bring up your writing to everyone you meet! You never know what can come of it!
