Lower Elementary - Sustained Silent Reading
We set aside 30 minutes every day to read a book, or two, or three for SSR or Sustained Silent Reading time. It’s rarely actually silent though. Heard so far today: several chuckles (funny books), a few snores (boring books), and a couple sounds that would suggest lunches are being processed by digestive tracts (an opportunity to practice saying, “Excuse me,” instead of giggling).
We are all busy, but are you setting aside time to sit down, breathe, and let your child see you read your favorite books at home? If not, consider reconnecting with a favorite author or genre; you know, the one you used to read everything from before work, parenting, and social media left you wishing for more hours in the day. In fact, make an appointment with yourself to stop and read. Block off the time on your calendar and invite your child to join you with their favorite book. It’s the kind of time that’s never wasted!
