I decided to go with my original idea and I installed some LEDs into the head so that the character's eyes can glow a bit. I'll cut out some holes once the head is painted and secured.

Current status of puppet: paper mache is done, and I'm working on clothing and painting it now. Hands and shoes are also on the to-do list.

Update on the structure: the body has been covered in foil and then covered in paper mache, and the head is ready for a layer of paper mache. Once the 'shell' of paper mache is complete, I'll work on installing an IR sensor that activates the tail movements.

Update on the structure: I have just about finished with the padding, so once the head is finished, I'll cover this with a thin layer of foil and then cover it with paper mache. Currently the tail is still only attached with a clip, but I think I like the idea of keeping it this way because it's safer for traveling and storing this so nothing gets bent out of place.

I found an interesting explanation about using event loops with an arduino. There is an analogy for it about checking items on a stove and stirring them only when they need to be stirred (event loop), rather than stirring them all on a schedule (loop with delays).
