Colloidal Silica Production Line - Electrodialysis Inside a Silica Sol Manufacturing Plant
Most manufacturers producing colloidal silica still depend on packed ion exchange resin beds a batch process that interrupts production for regeneration cycles and consumes significant volumes of acid and caustic. Electrodialysis changes that. This image shows the membrane cell stack from a silica sol manufacturing plant commissioned by Laxminarayan Technologies, where sodium ions are extracted from dilute sodium silicate through selective ion-transfer membranes driven by direct current. As sodium concentration drops, silica particles nucleate and grow in stable colloidal suspension continuously, without resin contact or chemical addition at the conversion stage.
The practical benefit is a cleaner process with tighter particle size control and lower reagent costs at scale. Plants are fully automated, touch-panel operated, and built to commercial production capacities. Modular construction means capacity can be matched to actual output requirements, and pilot units are available where process validation is needed before full-scale investment.
