Summary: Grace Helbig meets the DC universe as she takes on the position of Cat Grants body guard, only to fall into a world of new powers and the task of keeping her Alter Ego a secret.
Ship: Kara Danvers x Grace Helbig
A/N: I’m trying something new, so I figured why not post it here first. It’s not really a mind blowing first chapter but it’s a start. I don’t know I should continue though, so let me know your thoughts.
The pavement curved under each step I took, a sharp burn rippling through my chest as I went on. The night air was humid and sticky, every second that went by made this worse. Made everything worse. My ankles were cold, the rain from puddles splashing up around my pants, making the fabric damp and irritating.
“I lost him,” I mumbled into the phone that was pressed against my ear, the object hot as I tried to make out my words with nothing more than a few pants. “I’m sorry, Ms. Grant”
There was a loud sigh against my eardrum, a sound that I was accustomed to when it came to Cat. She was never mean about it, but it was a signal that I had fucked up- yet again. The sweat that ran across my brow and collected around my collarbone was a telltale sign of a valiant effort, but that wasn’t enough anymore.
“It’s fine, Grace.” She eventually said, something I didn’t hear often in my line of work. “I’m sure it won’t happen again. Just come back up, we have a few more things to discuss.”
I didn’t bother responding before hanging up and putting the phone in my pocket. My aunt wasn’t much for pleasantries, especially when it came to work. She didn’t have to give me the job, after all. I was just lucky enough to have such a business mogul in the family.
Catco was one of the largest companies in the city. It was a fashion magazine of sorts, but more of a news empire. One that was strong willed and run with exact precision. Cat only hired who she felt right to keep employed.
The security guard gave me a small nod as I flashed the employee badge to him, earning access to the larger part of Catco. I was still out of breath, the blazer around my shoulders sticking to the nave of my back. I clenched my eyes shut and inhaled once more as the elevator took me to the top floor.
It was late enough for the offices to be mostly dark, a few people still worked in their private rooms, but only two of three of Cat’s main employees sat in the main room- giving me a slight nod here are there as I walked towards her office.
I pressed my hand lightly against Winn’s shoulder, his back hot against my hand as he let out a small snort, his eyes wide as he shot up from his desk “What happened? Who’s there?”
“Go home, Winn,” I gave him a small smile as he stretched slightly, leaning back in his chair with a small groan. “You fell asleep. Again.”
He wiped a bit of drool from his face as I kept walking towards the office, my shoes loud and echoed in the hollow area. Cat raised her dark gaze from the tablet her gaze was focused on. It reflected off of her low glasses, a bit of her hair falling into her stare.
She gestured me to close the door, the glass not giving her much privacy- but it did allow her to have a certain ambiance to the whole of the office. Cat leaned into the back of her chair, giving me an odd look. “You could have caught him.”
“He was fast.”
“You are faster” She let out a small sigh “I hate the press. You’d think after building most of them up they would be less interested in my little company here.”
I nodded quietly, knowing that she was on the verge of speaking the rest of her mind. Once Cat Grant got talking, there was no real way to stop her. I didn’t mind much, though. She was insightful, even when she was scolding me from holding back too much.
“We need to keep an eye out for them, okay?” Cat spoke in a softer tone than she did with the rest of her employees “I know you’ve got plenty on your mind tonight, but focusing on this is all that matters-“
There was a slight knock at the door, one that was hollow and took the attention off of the rest of my Aunts thoughts. Winn looked exhausted, but ready to shake out of his shoes. Cat intimidated him more than I would care to admit, but for good reason. She had a terrifying edge about her.
“I hate to interrupt, it’s just, I mean, the news-“
“Get to it,” Cat stood, “I don’t have all night.”
“Channel five.” He knit his eyebrows together as he crossed his arms over his chest. He gave me an odd look as I turned back to the large screens right behind the desk. They were usually on, but silent. Neither of us had paid attention to the news this late at night, knowing that whatever happened, Cat would already know.
“Grace,” Cat mumbled as I grasped the remote, unmuting the largest television. It was a picture of the bay, a large wing of a flight above water. There was the light of a helicopter, one that was picking up the silhouette of a young girl; blonde and tall against the rest of the dark settings.
“Is this girl the hero that National City has been waiting for?” A female News Caster popped up on the screen. Her male counterpart giving a wide smile to the camera.
“Well, she certainly knows how to make an entrance.”
The coffee was scalding against my lips, something I didn’t have the patience or the time to wait for. It was a bad habit of mine- not waiting. The woman behind the counter gave me a knowing look as I flinched way from it, eventually taking the plastic lid off before letting it cool.
“You do that every single morning, you know.” A familiar voice filled my ears, sending a small smile to my face as I turned around the face the girl sitting at a nearby table. The girl in thick rimmed glasses was leaning against the booth heavily, a large cinnamon bun on the plate in front of her.
She wore a light blue sweater over a darker skirt, one that made it look like she was auditioning for an advert that was meant to sell the picture of the perfect family. Kara Danvers was no stranger to the small café or the happy way of life.
“And you eat one of those every morning?” I pointed out with a small bit of humor in my voice “I still don’t understand how you keep that figure.”
“easy,” she popped a bit of the baked treat into her mouth “I’m an alien.”
“Ah, You know, I thought so.” I took a sip of the slightly cooled black coffee, knowing it would be a long day at the company “I would be rude of me to mention it though.”
“That’s never stopped you before, Grace.” She pointed out valiantly standing as picked up her small bag. It was probably filled with everything and anything that Cat Grant could possibly wish for. “Walk with me?”
She didn’t wait for an answer. Kara was always fast on her feet, ready to spring into action in any way that she could. I shook my head softly, picking up my step to keep with her pace. “Speaking of aliens, did you see the news last night?”
Kara stopped quickly, a bit of a snort coming out of her mouth in the form of what I could only assume was a nervous laugh “Did I? I mean, yeah, I did. But alien? Yeah right.”
“mm,” I lifted my chin “You don’t think? I mean, what else could she be, right?”
“mutant.” Kara was quick to say “Or maybe a vampire. Werewolf?”
“A werewolf that can fly?” I smirked, “Everyone is already talking about the amazing Supergirl.”
“Girl?” Kara asked, shocked by my words. I knit my eyebrows together softly. I thought she would know the mock title considering She was Cat’s best assistant. “Why would she give such… such a strong woman the title of a girl? I mean, Metropolis has Superman and we can’t even give our hero justice?”
She started walking with more purpose than before, my hand gripping her wrist slightly. She halted, giving me a slightly fired up look “whoa, slow down there, Tiger. I’m sure Cat meant nothing by it. And if you go up there like this she’ll make me escort you out.”
Kara let out a small huff, crossing her arms over her chest “You’re right.”
“I know I am,” I laughed slightly “I’m sure the name won’t stick anyway.”
