Dear Readers,

I apologize for not writing in some time you can say after the recent events I have been very disturbed. Although my spirits have since improved as history was added to our time. A few months ago Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as our sixteenth president and he didn’t even win the popular vote! Jonathan and I were absolutely livid when we had heard the news. As proud citizens of South Carolina we simply could not stand for it. Thus when we seceded from the Union in December of 1860 I was not surprised in the least. The government officials had our full support in the matter. Apparently Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas were behind them as well for they followed suit. It seemed his approval rating plummeted when he called for more troops at Fort Sumter for next thing we knew Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee were next to secede. The only states that seemed to remain in the union were Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware. Recently we came to elect President Jefferson Davis to lead us as the Southern Confederacy. Although for what comes of this divide is sure to be known as time continues.

Furthermore the treacherous Maryann and her husband had taken to the north to hide among the Union. I am sure no one shall miss them.

Dear Readers,

The two nominees for office has given their ideology of slavery and I have come to my decision for who shall win. Heed my advice for if Stephen Douglas does not win then our rights as citizens may be in turmoil. Douglas is the nominee for the Democratic Party while Abraham Lincoln is the Republican nominee. Douglas is a man of character who is campaigning for himself as a true leader should. He is willing to give slavery a chance by putting it to a vote through the people unlike Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln with the help of delusional activists wishes to abolish slavery right from under us. Maryann, my neighbors wife, has already spread word for her approval of Lincoln and has taken steps for her husband to donate money to his cause. That shall be a fool's donation. Jonathan, my husband, and I are astonished by their audacity. We have refused to see them since we heard the news.

                                       The election of 1860

The election of President Abraham Lincoln in 1860 was huge advancement for the north in their efforts to prevent the westward expansion of slavery and to out right end the practice of slavery in the United States. Lincoln’s election brought the souths’s fear to an uncomfortable level, as southerners were scared the president would completely abolish slavery. The southerners feared the abolishment because it would completely decrease the mass production of cotton and eliminate the idea of African American slaves permanently being the lowest American social class. It didn't take long for the disgruntled south to respond to Lincoln’s election and “On December 20, 1860, by a vote of 169-0, the South Carolina legislature enacted an "ordinance" that "the union now subsisting between South Carolina and other States, under the name of 'The United States of America,' is hereby dissolved”(ushistory.org). South Carolina’s bold attempt to remove themselves from Union gave confidence to other states and shortly after Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas all seceded from the union. These states went on to create the Confederacy who elected Jefferson Davis a former politician and soldier as their leader. This act showed how severely the north and south were divided leaving both sides out of ideas and fearing war may be imminent.
