A microinteraction is a small often overlooked interactive detail that can have a big impact on teh overall user experience of a product. When people talk about design, they often discuss its "look and feel." In this context, a microinteraction is part of the "feel." Microinteractions are everywhere. From how a user turns off the ringer on a phone, to how a user figures out which next step to take on an online form—they exist to limit cognitive load. I found this interview with Dan Saffer, author of Microinteractions: Designing with Details, on the eLearning Coach podcast to be very insightful.
