A GOLDEN PIT IN THE SKY

My partner and I painted this for Trans Cosmologies II this year and finished it this weekend after having schlepped the whole massive canvas up to Stirling on the train. It depicts the moment Elagabalus brought the baetyl of Elagabal to the Roman forum, with its intended resting place being the Elagabalium, which we have reconstructed from archaeological sketches there in the top right.

A drawing ive made of the statue of Elagabalus in Rome! Very proud of this!
(As you may notice due to my other drawings, im much better in realism than in a more cartoonish style I often try to draw in)
The cult of Baal at Emesa represented by the vigorous prick of Elagabal, the black god, paralleled, through its complex and overloaded rites, the cult of Tanith-Astarte, the moon, which held sway a few kilometres away, in the fragrant depths of the temple of Hierapolis. There it was, in this temple consecrated to woman's vagina, to her deified sex, that a sweating and bearded Apollo would emerge during the main festivals and would consecrate his oracles through the voice of the high priest, advancing or retiring upon the shoulders of his bearers. This Apollo all in gold, with a thick fringe of black horsehair affixed beneath his chin, arrives borne on mens' backs, carried by a dozen or so tottering bearers who can scarcely manage to support his weight. The crowd bows down. The incense rises, as if streaming from every orifice.

-Elagabal, the stone sun- A Roman sun god imported from Syria by the Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. He was worshipped in the form of a black stone, possibly a meteorite, that was even paraded around in a chariot during festivals.
