Like They Do In The Future...
EL-P is better than everyone else. There I said it. The guy just doesn't know how to slow down. He goes quiet for a bit, then this? Dude is an icon. First he producers Killer Mike, now he destroy's our ears with sounds from the future. This isn't a game. He is a serious man, and he makes serious music. Cancer 4 Cure is a nonstop neck breaking ride through a post apocalyptic New York City where EL-P is the sole voice. As it should be.
EL-P handled every aspect of this record (as he does) and the final product is something that we won't see until the sun burns out and he stands alone on the throne of a crumbling system.
Each song blends into the next, and the cohesiveness of the album is something we haven't seen in hip hop for some time. Sure there are those that dabble with concepts, but C4C is what they all hope to have. He takes you up and down. His sample choices are like nothing anyone has ever heard. Basically it is same ole same ole for EL-P.
His lyrics are tough and intense. They paint a picture of a dark yet hopeful future. He presents us with the opportunity for a "fresh start on a new world". I'm taking it. His rough and aggressive brooklyn glazed flow taps into his beats as no one else could. The features he chooses to have are perfect for what he was hoping to convey with this record. What else is there to expect for EL-P? Def Juxx may be gone, but the spirit is still strong, and moving forward.
