Like everybody else, I jumped on the bandwagon that was Twilight Fan-fiction, and like everybody who came into it after the internet fame, I read it with biased eyes and read it as a joke. And as a lover of the movies, I wanted to know what I was missing, what was lost in adaptation that said, I re-read Fifty Shades of Grey with my current eyes, and all I can say is that at the time, we did entirely too much.
Other than the jokes about it being fanfiction. Because that's still wild and funny. Especially when you see all the little Twilight-isms left in FSOG
Overall, the way it was discussed was clearly so heavily based in purity culture, sex/kink shaming, and just general prudishness. People also talked about the dangerous BDSM practices in this, and sure, it's not perfect, but it's also a fiction book and not a guide on how to do BDSM play. Personally, I didn't find it all that dangerous. Christian tells Ana to research it for herself. He offers to introduce her to one of his former subs to talk about what being his sub entails. (Anna declines on some I don't want to talk to other women he's fucked nonsense) and she herself views it as the evil other.
On my redux, I was able to enjoy it for what it was. I found Ana and Christian to be really cute. I love that she wasn't as much of a milquetoast push-over as people try to make her out to be. If anything, her reaction is very valid for how romantically & sexually inexperienced she is.
I found the best part to be how they are both learning and experiencing new things together. I love that he's drawn to her just as much as she is to him. I love how Christian finds himself doing all these typical boyfriend things for her and can't really figure out why.
Christian is sexually experienced, but when it comes to romantic relationships, he is just as inept as Ana. They are on the same playing field when it comes to love.
The Contract. That was the main talking point at the time. So many people were going on and on about how dangerous it was. It's stated multiple times in the book that Christian uses it to have a hard copy, no gray areas when it comes to the do's, and don't when in the Red Room. So that no one crosses a boundary or so, no one can say I didn't know if they did.
They have sex entirely too much. It's every other chapter. I love that for them. It's realistic to a new relationship, but I don't need to see every single session from start to finish. I know it's like that because James was writing this chapter by chapter on tumblr, and that's what the girls wanted, but for a book, it's too much.
Also, the sexiest thing in this whole book is Christian's essay long email. Whew! [Fans self]
