the funny thing is, there’s still new and interesting low hanging fruit in math imo but it’s all in the study of eigenfunctions, and that’s why I like them. For instance this paper is 8 pages long, and uses pretty basic of stuff. It doesn’t even use any fancy microlocal analysis. And it’s from just 10 years ago! This paper is harder (it uses pseudodifferential operators and some fancier inequalities), and (gasp) double the length, but it’s got the very highly respected name of Tao attached to it, just in case anybody was worried no one famous enough is interested in this kind of thing. It’s still not that hard.
so anyway ...... the idea that all the low hanging fruit in math is gone isn’t true. now, the low hanging fruit that’s actually useful for anything, on the other hand.....
