welcome to whispering pines, west virginia.
whispering pines is a city of about 9,800 people located in southern west virginia, usa, in the shadow of the appalachians. formerly a mining and logging town, it's grown significantly over the past 100 years and is now most known for hosting the largest campus of walter thomas frost university and for attracting tourists to its beautiful natural landscape.
up pines, also simply "up", is situated along the city's part of the whispering peaks (technically the allegheny mountains); it's marked by high terrain and dense spruce forests. up pines is mostly inhabited and frequented by the rich and upper-middle class, as well as wealthy tourists.
down pines or "down" is in the valley below the whispering peaks. the slow-moving, freshwater believer river runs through this part of town, with a clearing that houses city hall and main street. many of the cities' businesses and less affluent homes are more spread out here.
the area has hot, humid summers; mild autumns and springs; and cold, snowy winters. most of the trees around are softwood trees, such as the famous spruces, but there's plenty of pine and hemlock, too. the land is inhabited by animals such as white-tailed deer, black bears, gray squirrels and cottontail rabbits. rainbow trout and striped bass dominate the believer river. if you look up, you'll find blue jays, louisiana waterthrushes and barn owls. it remains, as a land surveyor in 1758 said, "terribly wondrous country."
