It was frigid cold in the Grizzlies. You were shivering a bit, and you couldn’t imagine how cold Eagle Flies was, even if he refused to show it.
“Are you sure you don’t want an extra layer?” You asked him, tucking your hands under your arms with your bow haphazardly tucked between your legs.
“I’ll be fine, [Name].” He responded cooly. He pulled out his binoculars and you swear you saw his lip shivering.
You reluctantly let him go about his business and unfold your arms, readying your bow. You spot a deer and draw your string back to your cheek. As your about to release, you feel the string snap against your cheek.
“Jesus, are you sure you aren’t cold? My string just snapped.” You asked him, turning your full body towards him. Before he could answer, he sneezed multiple times in a row.
“I said I’m fine.” He responds. You noticed his face was red and placed the back of your hand against his cheek and forehead. He was burning up.
“No, absolutely not,”You told him, bringing him up with you, “You’re on fire, either you get on your horse and follow me back, or I drag you onto my horse and bring us back.” Your voice was firm yet filled with worry. His face softened, just a little.
“Fine.”
A fine was all you needed. Quickly, you made your way over to the two horses left by some rocks and led them over to Eagle Flies.
Once back on the horses and on the trail, you made sure to stay beside him incase he became more sick.
—
The grass began to show and the snow became less and less, but Eagle Flies seemed to only become more sluggish. You reached your hand over and felt his skin.
“You’re even hotter than before!” You exclaimed.
“Thanks.” He told you weakly with a sad excuse of a smile.
You scanned your surroundings and found a small, and seemingly, abandoned shack. You tugged on your reigns and nodded for him to follow.
The closer you came to the shack, the worse he looked. Cautiously, you unholstered your pistol and searched the shack for any squatters.
Empty.
As you holstered the gun, you strode to his side and guided him inside towards the small bed.
“We don’t need to stop, I’ll be fine.” He protested, gently pushing away from you.
“No, you’re not fine!” You exclaimed, “You’re worrying me sick, please just lay down.” You begged him. He gave in, letting you take care of him.
The fire place was dry and had fire wood beside it, ready to burn and you had cans of food along with herbs and medicine to help with his sickness.
The aroma of the soup and the sound of Eagle Flies’s snores filled the air. Though he was still feverish, it wasn’t as nearly as bad from before.
You hated how he would give his all for his family and people, but refused the same help when he truly needed it. It’d be hypocritical if you said you weren’t the same, but that’s not important. What was important was changing the now warm cloth with a cooler one.
You pulled it off his forehead, stray hairs sticking on, and dunked it into a pail of water you retrieved from a stream near by. Placing it back on, his eyes fluttered open, looking around before landing on your own eyes.
“Are you feeling better?” You asked him softly, brushing his hair back, “The soup is about done if you want any.” You told him, gesturing to the pot behind you.
“I am, thank you,” He meekly said, “Some soup doesn’t sound bad.”
You nodded and pressed a small kiss to his cheek before standing to search for a bowl. Once you did, you took a different cloth, dipped it in the water, and thoroughly wiped out the bowl of any dust. While pouring the soup and readying some medicine, you heard fabric shifting from behind you.
“Do you think you can ride back fine, or should we stay the night here?” You asked him, handing the soup over along with the medicine and sat in the chair previously put there. He looked out to the window and was met with a darkening sky.
“I’d rather not ride at night, are you fine staying here?” Eagle Flies asked, a newfound softness that seemed to surprise himself.
You nod and bask in the silence for a moment before excusing yourself to check on the horses. The cool air felt nice on your face after sitting in front of a fire place. Breathing in, you walk over to the horses and led them to the small stream to drink before leading them back to hitch them to the fence.
Coming back in the small shack you saw he had fallen back asleep, the bowl sat on the table next to the bed and medicine gone. You smiled and prepared your sleeping roll next to the bed incase he needed anything.
“Sleep with me?” His raspy voice asked. You looked up and was met with a half awake Eagle Flies, scooting over to make room on the already small bed.
“How could I say no?” You asked, climbing in with him and allowing him to readjust to lay comfortably. He rolled to have his back facing you, giving access to drape you arms over his abdomen.
He clasped your hand in one of his and pressed a small kiss to the back of it before letting go once more, drifting to sleep. You returned the favor and pressed a few kisses to his shoulder and traced shapes into the front of his chest with the hand laying over his abdomen.
—
A beam of light fell on your eyes, waking you up immediately and accidentally waking up Eagle Flies as well.
“Did you sleep well?” You asked him, your voice a little raspy. He only offers a small “mhm” as he sits up, his hair a little messy.
His cheek felt much cooler now. You sigh in relief and get out of bed to pack things up.
“I’ll check in on the horses, are you ready to leave soon?” You asked him, almost out of the door.
“Yeah, just give me a minute.” He responds, stretching out his arms and back. You nod and step outside again, giving both horses some food for the ride back and brushing out any straggling knots out of their mane and tail.
For the last time, you go back inside and grab your things and dump the water onto the fire to ensure it wouldn’t keep burning.
“Ready?” You called out, turning your head back to him.
“Of course.” He responds.
—
Back at the reservation, a worried Rains Fall was waiting.
“I’m glad to see you’re back, how was the hunting?” He asked his son, who was evidently a little embarrassed for the lack of hunted animal.
“We weren’t able to do much hunting.” Eagle Flies said, trailing off at the end. Rains Fall seemed to pick up what he was saying, but wanted to hear it.
“Why is that? Did you forget something?” He asked. You couldn’t keep in your laughter anymore.
“He’s suffered enough, I’m sure he won’t forget his coat next time.” You snickered. Rains Fall seemed pleased enough with the answer and let his son be.
After he left, you bid your goodbyes and planted a quick peck to Eagle Flies cheek.
“Don’t forget your coat next time.” You teased before leaving on your horse.
You wouldn’t see it, but he rolled his eyes and smiled.

Don’t let anyone fool you: the hardest part of Nanowrimo isn’t forming the plot. It’s naming all your characters.
Serena honestly had no idea why she’d shown up to the Valentine’s Day party. It wasn’t like she had anyone to share it with, and the idea of being a part of the it’s complicated population at the event felt rather depressing, especially being around all the loved up couples, it reminded her of the gaps in her own personal life, and how much she longed for a certain someone. Things were the very definition of complicated, and on that particular night, she wanted to let loose, have a few drinks and enjoy herself.
With a glass of wine in hand and a yellow band around her wrist, the blonde scanned the vicinity, wondering if she’d see anyone she knew. It didn’t take long until she caught sight of a very familiar figure. A fellow doctor from the hospital, the very man she’d been sleeping with casually for months. There were feelings bubbling beneath the surface and for the first time in a long while, Serena had no clue what to do. She really liked Gabriel. He was sweet, gentle, and probably one of the most beautiful men she’d ever laid eyes on. Why was it taking her so long to take things to the next level?
Quickly taking another sip of her drink, she wandered over to him, a smile forming on her face unprompted. It was natural when she was around him. He made her feel happy and wanted, and she’d be absolutely crazy if she’d ever let him go. “Well, hey there, stranger.” She greeted once she’d approached Gabe. “I didn’t think I’d see you here. It’s nice to see you, though.” She began, her gaze drifting down to the matching yellow band on his wrist, giving her an inkling of hope. — @docmelendez.
