so i recently reblogged something and detailed my personal headcanons on Eret's tribe and the fact that i think there's evidence that they more than likely ate dragons (specifically Woolly Howls). most of that boiled down to the fact that both of Eret's canonical real world cultural inspirations are from the arctic circle and both are cultures that hunt and eat predatory animals and the fact that Eret's furs resemble the pelt of a woolly howl
now, if we look at Berk, there's no one who wears furs resembling that of the in-universe furred dragons. i'm going to use Snotlout as my primary example, since he's part of the core ensemble, meaning that he had a lot of thought put into his design.
in Snotlout's first film's design, he appears to have a wool vest. using a real sheep as reference, you can see that the way the fibers rest and coil together is the same.
why does this matter? well, Snotlout is meant to be a representation of the average citizen on Berk, and if even the model Berkian man doesn't wear dragon pelts or scales, then what does that say about the culture? despite killing dragons for decades, they don't use their hides for clothing, shelter, or weaponry. it isn't hard to believe that they wouldn't eat the dragons either if no other parts of their bodies are being utilized.
why wouldn't they eat dragons though, especially since there are lines in the original film stating the fact that there is famine caused by the dragon raids? why not eat the animals that caused your hunger in the first place? i think Berk considered dragon meat tainted. perhaps there were superstitions about dragon meat causing illness, or perhaps stories of dragon meat turning the men who consumed it into dragons!
or maybe there are cultural and religious taboos about eating the flesh of maneaters. really, the possibilities are endless!
aren't you two forgetting someone 🤨
