The Leviathan Cometh (For Dinner)
The Maw had come up for its usual rounds of picking up patrons to dine on its⦠lovely food. This night, however, there was a rather odd guest in the crowd. It was a humanoid fish man wearing a pinstripe suit, with badly cut holes as to allow the fins on his arms and legs to ābreathe.ā
The most defining feature of his outfit was the golden crown on the top of his forehead, inset with a single large emerald. The King was let in without incident, and was led to a table. The waiter gave him a menu, and walked off without even asking him what drink he wanted!Ā
Well, whatever. He needed isolation for his plan anywayā¦
Edwin didnāt normally pay attention to the patrons when he weaved his way through them back towards the furnace, after The Lady had called him up to her. Most of the patrons were always busy eating - the worst ones, thankfully, were off in other places, but still. It wasnāt good to linger in the dining area.
Being Above always gave him chills, and not because he was so used to being in the furnace. āAboveā meant that he was going to either hurt or be hurt. Thankfully - or unthankfully - these days, it largely meant that somebody was getting a new burn scar, and heād always hated doing that. It had taken him what felt like ages to grow numb to it.
This time, though, Edwin paused, breaking his usual mask of trying to look much more dangerous than he actually was. There was somebody different in the crowd. They werenāt human. Granted, there were lots of non-humans that came to the Maw, but this one was⦠different. He was fishlike, from what Edwin could see, trying not to stare as he continued moving, slowing only slightly.
He hoped nobody would notice him diverting his course to get a better look at the man.
Whatever his species, Edwin had never seen it, and wondered if the man would get to go home. What was his home like, Edwin wondered idly, still watching him. Did he live beneath the sea? Maybe a tropical area, shallow enough that the Maw would never be able to drag itself close, or surrounded by lethal reefs that ate up anything that came near.
āI hope she doesnāt take an interest in youā¦ā Edwin muttered to himself as he walked. He had to get back to the furnace. It would be running low soon enough.
āCan Snatchy even lose his fluff? What does he look like beneath? Heās a ghost, so in theory, his fluff canāt be removed, or not in a way that would leave it intact...ā
Edwin doesnāt really wanna think about a bald Snatchy.

even just a simpleā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦kinda hug made Snatchy a blushing wreck. Then that little kissā¦his mane looked fluffier than a cloud. Not only that. but his tail was hitting the ground a little! His touchstarved self missed the warmth of another, and for some reason Edwin was a walking heater. which was justā¦perfect. After taking a second to recover, Snatchy finally replied.Ā āNo its fine! i love the smell of pastries. Takes me back! Iā¦I missed you a lot Edwin. Iām surprised youāre not mad at me.ā With slight hesitation, he looked around for a moment, just before looking back at Edwin with a soft smile before shifting his form so that he was at Edwinās size, and gently kissed the other.
There was a part of Edwin, beneath the nerves and mild fear that Snatchy was secretly angry, that was quietly pleased at the spirits reaction - how he fluffed up, got blushy, and started fidgeting. It kind of made him want to do it again.
āThatās good to hear... I found a place to stay in Mafia town that has a stone-oven in it, so Iāve been doing a lot of baking. Iāve always found it relaxing...ā But then Snatchy suggested Edwin mad at him - and Edwinās thoughts were immediately distracted.
āWhat? No! I could never be angry at you!ā Heād been angry at Vanessa, at what she did, how badly sheād overreacted, but he could never be mad at Snatchy. Well... maybe if the spirit had never come back, or come back and pretended none of it had ever happened... But right now? No! āYou said you... needed time to think about things. About yourself. And to get a handle on being... so big. Thatās entirely understandable!ā He made a motion that implied he was going to speak more on the subject - until Snatchy shrank himself down, and gave a kiss of his own.
Edwinās insides felt just a bit like heād been stuffed into a too-hot room, and he was sure he was blushing. He was also sure that at least a few parts of him were now on fire - but was too delighted to bother with it.
āI could never be mad at you. Iām happy youāre alright, and that nothing happened to you.ā

Edwin, being a prince - or at least having once been one, he didnāt think he technically was anymore - could recognize royalty when he saw them. Honestly it wasnāt hard to. Whoever was in the fanciest clothing was generally either well-off and thus powerful, or royalty. He didnāt remotely recognize the style she wore, it didnāt match up with any of the nobles heād met over his lifetime, but he could tell - the way she held herself, the cleanliness of the fabric, everything about her screamed nobility-!
And it made him immediately straighten up, trying to pull at old memories and lessons to look more like his parents would have preferred he look around other nobles. Not that he really had anyone to anger should he do otherwise...
āI donāt believe Iāve ever met you before.ā Edwin started, squashing down an anxious thought of how much she resembled Vanessa in ways. āApologies beforehand if my, ah... manners, arenāt up to snuff. Itās been quite a while since Iāve spoken with anyone more refined than a... w-well... a thug, really.ā

Prince in the Big City
@mintteaandmemory
---
While Edwin was long accustomed to suddenly finding himself in new places, and generally was able to catch when the transition happened - though to be fair, it was usually between a town and a forest - this time, he didnāt notice. Tall cramped buildings changed to more tall cramped buildings, and while the sudden change in the type of people he was seeing out of the corner of his eyes did register in his head, he didnāt react until something... new, happened.
Something large, metal, and very loud zoomed by, and Edwin found himself jerking away, pressing his back into the brick of an unfamiliar building, just barely restraining his magic from setting himself alight.
Where was this? It wasnāt Mafia town, and it definitely wasnāt Subcon - not the ruined one, and most certainly not the lively one heād known so many years ago.
āIāve... never been here before.ā He muttered to himself, ignoring the strange looks he was getting as he observed the various metal... machines, zipping past. He had no idea what they were, but they werenāt going so fast that he couldnāt see the people within them. Vehicles? They must be - the road was different than what heād seen anywhere else, but damn if he didnāt recognize it for what it was. Carriages, he decided. Just like stone ovens had been replaced with electrical ones - or rather, more advanced electrical ones, carriages must have, as well.
āUm, pardon me if this sounds strange, but could you tell me where I am?ā Edwin asked, walking up to a woman he hoped was nice. It was lucky, he supposed, that his attire was now a casual blue suit beneath a fire-patterned red hoodie - it stuck out much less than what he used to wear. āI seem to have gotten a bit turned-around, you see, and Iām not familiar with the area.ā Understatement of the century, Edwin.
The smell of - oddly enough, for mafia town - baked goods can be found spreading around one part of town. Peeking through the open window of a once-run-down building will reveal Edwin, bouncing around as he works on mixing dry ingredients, quietly singing a tune to himself as he goes.
Given what happened last month, itās probably a good thing heās so cheerful.
Heād finally managed to get away from the mafia men - theyād been hounding him all day, certain that he was some long-lost fellow of theirs. After simply going along with them for most of the day, heād been left to his own devices, and immediately took himself and said devices to a nice, isolated area, away from any mafia or citizens.
āJust as the moonlight opens up the sky - breaking through the clouds beyond...ā His voice was quiet, perhaps because he knew he was in a cluttered island town. Clearly though, he was trying to not be found. āSo will our doubts dissolve, and if you feel this way at all; you wonāt have to walk alone for long~ā His legs dangled over the edge of the jagged stone he sat on, swinging slightly with his apparently relaxation.
Another indication of him being relaxed is how his hands sit on his lap, cupped and holding a gently crackling little fire.
