“Edward is an odd name for a demi-god,” Yao Ling remarks, weaving strands of sunlight between his fingers like silk. “Helios would make more sense. Or Ra. Nyambe.. Malakbel. Surya.”
Edward huffs a laugh, resting his palm on Ling’s shoulder. “You’re just listing out solar deities now.”
“Edward just seems so down to Earth. There are mortals named Edward. But you are a god.”
“Are there not mortals named Ling?”
“I am no god, Ed.”
“Right.” He leans into Ling, forehead slotting into the crook of his neck. “Well, once, I walked the Earth like you.”
Ling stares at him for a while, quiet. Then, sitting up as if he’d decided on something, Yao Ling extends his palm toward the pseudo-sun. “Come to the island with me.”
How badly Edward wants to take it. “The island? Are you certain? I thought only xiān could go.”
“You don’t need a boat to cross the weak sea, do you, silly?” Ling takes his hand and draws close, a grin crossing his face. Rays of Edward’s light shimmer on his silk clothes. “You are a deity. We would kneel to kiss every place your feet have touched.“
