Chapel, Twilight
In every direction, it's perfect green grass,
All the right answers to everything they ask.
Covers up her struggle with a halfhearted grin--
Doesn't quite remember, but she knows it's a sin.
A story told, she starts to cry.
The tears won't stop, and she doesn't know why.
Trying to sing Amazing Grace,
Just barely yesterday, and soaking his face
As they stand in this house of the Lord.
Quick check for the vital signs
And love is not a valentine,
It's a full and it's a flaming Hallelujah.
Back to her nails and the smoke around his head,
Wondering, and knowing, and better off dead.
In the purple glow of a fly trap light,
They're breaking all the mirrors 'cause they can't be right.
Toes in the water and sun in the face,
So where do we go when we can't have this place?
With the firefly dance and the stars above
And redeeming and boundless and eternal love?
And here in this house of the Lord?
Well, maybe I've learned, as livers go,
That life's no heavy metal show.
Soft, but with resolve, it's Hallelujah.
And we are the house of the Lord.
