November 2023 Bouldering Update
Since joining a climbing gym (Edgeworks) at the start of September, bouldering has quickly become my main hobby and favorite way to spend my free time. I still can’t put my finger on what it is about climbing, but it really has been an incredible hobby to have. When I first deliberated over whether or not to get the membership, I figured I’d visit the climbing gym one to two times per week. In actuality, I’ve been climbing two to four times per week averaging 2.78 visits per week. Now that I’m thoroughly obsessed with climbing, I’d honestly like to be climbing even more. I think four times per week may end up being the sweet spot as it allows me to climb regularly and also avoid climbing more than two days in a row. Currently, I climb pretty much every Saturday and Sunday and then more randomly during the week.
About a month ago I shared that I’d completed my first two V2 boulders. It was only a week or so later that I completed my first V3. I didn’t know it at the time though because it was one of the new climbs that hadn’t yet been officially graded. While it wasn’t exactly easy for me, I will say that there were a number of V2s that were significantly more difficult for me. In other words, grades really don’t tell the complete story as each climber has unique strengths and challenges. The same thing happened with my next V3 in that I attempted and completed it before it had been officially graded. At this point in time, I can climb just about all of the V2s in my gym. (There’s just one V2 where I get stuck at the second-to-last hold). This week I completed two more V3s and am currently working on another V3 and an “easy” V4. While my primary goal is just to have fun, the progress that I’ve been making has been really satisfying.
