Because as a man of wealth, who has amassed wealth in the form of assets like these, he is coveting, he is possessing. He cannot even read many of these manuscripts and books because of their fragility. Some cannot be handled constantly or can only be viewed through glass, only touched with pristine gloves. He thinks he is different from his ancestors, who preyed on the weak, on flesh, owning human like cattle for consumption but he is nOT and he does not even see the irony in thinking he is more evolved, more sophisticated, even more pure than his cannibal lineage when he has continued the cycle of imperialism and consumerism and possession posturing as a love of history.
