Took my daughter to work. Guess who will probably make games when they grow up? I never get much alone time with my middle kid and this was right up her alley. She asked intelligent questions, played and tested some really neat and cutting edge games, and experienced what I do as part of my job. She met the makers of one of our fave #edtech tools #HappyAtoms... and the maker of the super popular financial literacy game-Credit Stacker. So glad that we could share this alone time together! Realized a long time ago that the more you expose them to the larger their world becomes... She’s inspired to science the heck out of life now... watch our world. 🤓🤓🤓 🎮🎮🎮 👩🏽🔬👩🏽🔬👩🏽🔬 #edgames #EdGamesExpo #wocintech #WOCinSTEM #gamebasedlearning #gamification #takeyourchildtoworkday #LetsK12Better #takeyourchildtowork
Gamification: Using games to increase engagement
For a long time, video games have been seen as a distraction from education. Now more than ever teachers and educators everywhere are embracing games as a stimulating learning method. Games are a great way to create rewards for milestones and progression instead of a final judgment such as tests. Neurologist Judy Willis speaks of the concept of awareness by incremental goal progress. The brain engaged by video games is fueled by dopamine, the pleasure response. By being rewarded with visual or audio means, the brain feels accomplished not only by the reward, but also being able to access the next more challenging level. This is called intrinsic reinforcement. Maintaining the right gaming conditions motivates the individual for greater challenges. The brain must be challenged within reason. If the individual feels there is little chance of success, whether from lack of skills or a preconditioned mind frame from a previous experience, the brain will not exert the energy needed to continue. Implementing games into the classroom does not have to be an all or nothing approach. Games work best as an educational means when they are a voluntary option. Educational games come in a variety of platforms as well, from team building games that you can play as group to learn key life skills like collaboration or they can be individual games to learn specific skills. These games can be high tech games that are fully immersive like Civilization or Oregon Trail or they could be simple board games. The best way to see if a game would be appropriate for your class or curriculum would be to play the game for yourself. As we move into a more connected and digital age, games are a great way to increase learning as well as engagement.
For starters, even though the target audiences for media companies’ educational programs are often existing readers or viewers, those same people have different motivations when it comes to learning. They need more than just news, information or entertainment. They want tangible, in-demand, career-enhancing skills. That isn’t really what most newspapers, magazines or TV shows provide, though.

Edgames

Computer games for social studies - suggestions please!
This is a general call for help! If anyone has suggestions of computer/video games that can be used for teaching social studies I would love to hear them. I am going to finally finish my Masters (end of August) and my thesis will be an analysis of a number of games and their suitability and possible uses for the social studies classroom. They can either be games specifically designed for teaching/learning/education or commercial off-the-shelf games that can be used/adapted for teaching.
I'll try to keep the blog updated with my progress, so those interested can follow what I am doing (and tell me where I'm going wrong!).
