TOMMY stared down at the little girl who lay asleep in bed.
His little girl.
His blue gaze was unwavering in the depth of night. He hadnât slept. He didnât sleep. Even when the moonlight poured into his small room and smothered his daughter. Since returning from the war he studied her. Little Inara Shelby. The child whom he could not hold when she was born, or care for in her early years.
She was four years old.
Bloody four and only now he was around her, raising her as he promised Eden before the war. The war they all thought would not last. Just until Christmas, weâll be back then. But they weren't and he could not forgive himself for the years that passed.
âTom?â Edenâs voice crept into the room with the opening door. Tommy let out a hum of acknowledgement. The Shelby woman smiled fondly after shutting the door behind her. She wore her house coat as she took in the lovely sight. Father and daughter. âI used to do this. I still do,â she whispered. âShe twitches in her sleep yâknow? Like you do.â
Like I did, he wanted to say, as did she.
When he slept, he dreamt and there were never the nicest of dreams. He woke up yelling, shouting for the vivid visions to stop. It scared Eden.
And so he tried not to sleep, he poured his energy into anything else.
His daughter was one of those things.
âI never got to hold her,â he uttered as the silence passed.
Eden shuffled closer, âWhat?â
âWhen⊠as a baby. Was she heavy?â He didnât look up to his wife when he asked. Instead, his mind tossed around various weights whilst he studied his daughter.
She was not a small child, but she wasnât big either.
A fond smile tugged at Edenâs lips, before she spoke, âThe heaviest, almost broke my arms off.â
âAda was a heavy baby,â Tommy recalled, inhaling when he felt her nimble hand settle on his shoulder.
âGuess that made you strong,â she gently rubbed at his exposed skin.
âNo. I didnât know what strong was until I fought.â
âThere are different types of strong love. You had to endure a type that no one should.â She trod carefully with her words. âNow youâre back.â Not all of you. âNow you get to hold your daughter.â
Tommy swallowed harshly, âI wonât stop.â
âI know.â
âNo, Edie.â Tommy finally turned his head, adjusting his gaze to meet his wifeâs worrisome one. Her soft grasp left his shoulder and reached to link with his callous hands. âIâll make sure we make it out of here. Be the bright light through this fuckinâ bleakness eh?â
âI know Tommy. Shining through the fog of this murky city right?â Eden thoughtfully recalled the kind words her best friend once wrote. She carried them always. âWith your razor blades and all.â
Still speaking quietly he replied with purpose, âIf they protect who I love, then thatâs all that matters.â

So when they returned from the Great War, with half brains and half minds, Tommy knew he had to keep pushing. Retake the family business and pull them all up to the highest of places.
Seeing whatâs changed in Eden was a shock at first. She was more sure of herself. She wasnât a nurse anymore. But one of the accountants at the bookies. She could shoot a gun, unlike the last time he had been beside her. And much to his chagrin, she earned more attention than he would have liked.
His Eden was a looker. But he made sure that anyone who leered for too long knew they would be cut a smile each.
âTom, calm the fuck down,â Eden rolled her eyes, âItâs just lunch. Ada will be there. Little âNara is off with my mum. Finn and Isaiah are off doinâ god knows what.â
âI am calm,â Tommy said gruffly, leaning against their bedroom door, watching his wife fix her earrings whilst looking at her reflection. âPerfectly fuckinâ calm.â
âTell that to your bloody jaw,â she scoffed.
Tommy dismissed her retort, just as she stood up from the stall she used. The navy blue dress she wore flowed down to her calves. It was bad enough that she wore the hell out of the dress but it was his favourite colour.
âYouâre wearinâ that?â He gestured when she turned around.
âA dress? Yes, Tommy. Iâm wearinâ a dress.â She flattened it out with her hands, huffing when he blinked at her. âI love you but fuckinâ hell your jealousy is somethinâ I havenât missed.â
Tommyâs brow arched up, âYou sure about that?â
The distance between them had closed with his long strides, making her suck in a deep breath.
âMaybe not.â Eden muttered, âItâs only lunch and then Iâll be back beside you. Steerinâ the ship that is our future.â
His arms had reached out and found her waist, tugging her closer, âFuck steerinâ. Weâll be dragging this lot with us.â
âWhether they like it or not? Why am I not surprised with you.â She snaked an arm around her shoulder, teasingly stroking his bare neck. âCalm down. Iâve been to lunch with Ada plenty of times when you were away.â
âBut Iâm back now,â he stated firmly, senselessly tightening his grip.
Her amusement faltered, âAnd what, my freedom goes away?â
âNo. I didnât mean that,â he sighed when she shrugged him off.
âIâll be safe alright? You trust me?â She asked, frowning at his previous insinuation.
âYouâre one of the few people I trust,â Tommy said, running a hand through his hair.
âGood.â She moved away to grab her bag, âNow Iâll see you later.â She could feel him watching as she walked passed, and so she threw a grin at him as she said, âIâll make sure my other husband drops us off on the way to the betting shop.â
âFUCKINâ ell Edie what happened to you?â Arthurâs voices boomed through the snug. Tommyâs head snapped up when he noticed the state of his wife. He immediately got up and approached her whilst John placed down his gin. âYouâve been scrappin' at that hospital?â
Her white, long sleeved dress was coated in some blood. As was her apron. She gripped her distinctive cap and her medical bag.
âIâm alright.â She murmured seeing the concern on Tommyâs face. âIâm alright.â She repeated, trying to reassure him. âSomeone lost a leg, someone else lost an arm and someone else couldâve lost a head when they raised their voice at me.â
âWhiskey?â Thomas grabbed his glass and gave it to her.
âPlease.â She tossed it down, then let out a sharp exhale.
âSteady on Edie, the comedown is hard,â John chuckled when she placed the glass down.
Tommy asked, âWho raised their voice?â
âNone of your concern,â Eden replied, then quickly pressed a kiss to his lips. âNursinâ business ainât none of yours. Stick to fixinâ races.â
âOi,â Tommy cracked a smile, then guided her to a seat.
âWe do more than just that,â Arthur argued, John nodded in agreement.
âForgive me, I meant fixinâ races and drinkinâ âtil your legless,â her response wanted a roar of laughter from the two, whilst Tommy stared at her. âWhat? Did I hurt your feelings?â
He replied, âYou sure nursinâ still the right profession for you?â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âCome with me.â
Edenâs frown didnât fade but still, she followed him, she waved at Grace who was cleaning some glasses. The blonde barmaid waved back, eyes narrowing when she saw the married couple disappear into the back room.
Eden dropped his his hand and folded her arms waiting expectingly.
âWhat?â She asked.
He stated, âYouâre workinâ yourself to death Eden.â
âOh itâs Eden now,â she scoffed.
Tommy carefully admitted, âIâm worried.â
âWorry about the business,â she snapped.
He snapped back, âYou are my business. Always have been always will be. The mother of my child ââ
âHere you go,â she rolled her eyes.
âYes here I go.â He stepped closer, âIâm worried ââ
âThat I wonât be awake up to raise my daughter.â
He stilled, gritting his teeth before replying, âOur daughter. Inara is mine too.â He had grown tired of her claiming their daughter was hers. âAnd thatâs not what Iâm worried about. I donât want you stressinâ.â
She huffed, âOh, is that right?â
âWhat?â
âYou just want me in front of you. In the shop. Where you can see me right?â She ranted, shaking her head. âIâm good at what I do. It might not be horses or cars but I like workinâ. I gave it up when you were away at war. I made sure the shop stayed above water with Pol, all whilst raisin' a bunch of kids not just our own. Youâre back now and Iâm back practicin' medicine.â
He stressed, âAlright.â
âAlright?â
âNot arguinâ with someone as stubborn as you.â That earned raised brow.
âSays you.â Her simmering anger had settled, especially under the heated look he was giving her. âDonât look at me like that.â
He stepped closer, âLike what?â
âYou know what.â Her hands dropped to her sides. âItâs the same look that got me up the duff.â
âAnd whatâs so wrong about that?â A dry chuckle slipped through his lips.
âI ainât bringinâ another kid into this world. Not yet. Not until you handle the business with those guns â yes, I know about that.â She cast him a pointed look, watching him stiffen. âYou see, I love you, but more importantly I know you. You canât keep riskinâ our lives and expect me to listen to you when youâre not honest me.â
âIâll handle the guns.â He argued.
She squinted her eyes, âEven with the copper sniffinâ around and the barmaid?â
âThought you like Grace?â He questioned.
She countered, âDoesnât mean I trust her.â
âIâll handle it and Iâll tell you when I think we're in trouble.â He said settling his hand on her tense shoulders.
âSo weâre in trouble. And you think me workinâ in the shop where you can see me will keep me away from it, safe?â She stifled her amusement when he sighed, âAh, Iâm right.â
âMaybe,â Tommy mumbled.
âThe closest Iâm gonna get to an apology right?â
She sucked in a deep breath but her furrowed brows relaxed when his eyes softened.
He leaned in, and when he saw she wasnât backing away, he pressed his lips to hers, humming when his eyes fluttered shut.
He tugged her closer, settling his wondering hands on her waist.
âI promised to keep you and our daughter safe all those years ago,â Tommy reminded after pulling away and pressing his forehead to hers.
Eden whispered, âI know.â
âIâll never break that promise.â
âGood.â She drew back slightly, ââCause I need to change. Donât wonât those coppers thinkinâ I cut people.â
âMore than you already do,â he drawled.
She patted his chest, âWatch it.â
âAlright.â He raised his hands in surrender, making her kiss her teeth.
After a moment, she asked, âHow was your day?â
âYouâre not my daddy,â Inara stated, glaring at the bearded man who leaned against his cane.
âYou got that right,â Alfie huffed out.
âAlfie,â Tommy warned, ushering his daughter to come into the room, suppressing a smirk at their scepticism. ââNara this is an associate of me and your mummyâs, Alfie Solomons.â
âAre you ill?â Inara asked, noticing his cane.
ââNara, donât be rude,â Eden scolded.
âNo, itâs okay,â Alfie despite himself. âIâm not ill,â that was a lie. âJust need it to help me walk sometimes thatâs all.â The London Gang Leader wasnât didnât appear shocked by the girlâs appearance, but he fucking was. She looked like a mixture of her parents, a pretty little thing but her mouth obviously got her into trouble. âHereâŠâ he waved the cane around, holding back a groan.
Inara nose crinkled, âYour accentâs funny.â
Alfie snorted, âBetter than yours kid.â
Inara frowned and balanced between her amused-looking parents.
ââNara, youâre supposed to be playinâ,â Eden said.
âI want to ride my horse,â she explained
âLove you canât do that now, itâs too late, perhaps tomorrow.â Eden paused, âNow do you want to see your little sister, sheâs been wanting to see you.â
âSheâs almost three, she doesnât know what she wants,â the nine-year-old retorted, but quickly turned away from her motherâs pointed look. âBut I guess Iâll see her, give her one of my toys.â
âThatâs nice âNara.â Tommy crookedly smiled down at his eldest daughter, âGive Ines a kiss for me, Iâll be upstairs soon eh?â
âBye-bye Daddy. Bye-bye Mummy.â
When the door finally shut after Inara skipped out of the room, Alfie turned to her parents, with mirthfilled eyes.
âYou better be careful with that one.â
âEspecially âround you,â Eden pointed out.
âOi!â Alfie exclaimed, âyou got women walkinâ all over me Tommy.â
Tommyâs heart warmed at the wink his wife sent him, âOh, I know.â

âOh Michael, this is your cousin-in-law, Eden.â
Polly proudly introduced her to her son, she clutched him tightly as he sheepishly fiddled with the cufflinks of his cheap suit. Eden waddled in with the help of Tommy, her bump was big and she was ready to give birth in days, everyone knew it.
Arthur and John snickered once they saw the astonishment on Michaelâs face. Their young cousin knew that Tommy, the head of the family had a wife, but she didnât know what she looked like, every time he asked his mum⊠Polly, she answered, like one of the few people to rein your wild cousins in. It was the understatement of his fucking life, and Eden was truly a stunner.
âI canât be that big can I?â Eden asked, with a smile. âTommy, you said I wasnât that big.â
âYou look beautiful alright,â Tommy rushed out, with a hand resting on her back.
âSheâs carrying another Shelby in there Michael,â Arthur nodded to his sister-in-law.
John clasped his hands together, âHereâs prayinâ itâs a fuckinâ boy.â
âThereâs already too many of you lot,â Eden scoffed, then stepped forward, feeling Tommyâs eyes on her as she stood before Michael.
âItâs nice to meet you,â he nervously shook her hand, immediately thinking he maybe shouldâve kissed her cheek or hugged her but, his cousin didnât look like he would let her go. âAnother Shelby?â
Before she could respond, Arthur did.
âApart from Johnâs kin, Adaâs little one, you've got another cousin, little ankle biter,â he teased, earning a small smile from his cousin.
âInara, spittinâ image of Eden but with Tommyâs eyes,â Polly informed her son, as Eden sat down with Tommy assistance.
Their six-year-old daughter was about to be seven, inquisitive and cheeky she was. Whenever Inara would get grumpy sheâd look like her father but whenever she was lively and joyful she was the very picture of her mum.
âYeah, sheâs a brat,â Johnâs words made the married couple snap their heads in his direction.
âOi, you donât want to compare children,â Tommy pointed out.
âNot with your roster Johnny,â Eden quipped, making the room chuckle.
John rolled his eyes, âFuck off.â
Eden pointed at him, âYou do not want to rile me up, It could induce labour you pillock and Iâm not givinâ birth here.â
âYeah, leave it John boy, you do not wanna see a kid come out of her,â Arthur said through his laughter.
Tommy playfully glared, âStop talkinâ about my missus and my baby.â
Michael sat back, amused by the bickering. As first impressions go, he was pleasantly overwhelmed, the men were playing with their guns like toys before Tommy settled them. It was obvious Tommy ran things, he was the one who Michael first met. Tommy was confidant, powerful and very dangerous, that was clear, but his wife was something else. A beautiful woman, but to put up with this family, she had to have something up her sleeve.
âWhere is Inara?â Michael asked, breaking the arguments flooding the room.
âSheâs with my mum,â Eden spoke softly, stroking her bump.
ââNara threw a strop yesterday, sayinâ she didnât want another sibling,â John stated.
Tommy huffed out a smile, âWell itâs too late for that.â
âSheâs fuckinâ gettinâ one,â Eden agreed. âYouâll meet her soon Michael,â for the first time she looked at the boy, really looked at him, she saw his eyes, the detail swimming in his irisâ, âMy god you look so much like your mum.â She found herself choking back sobs, missing the joy on Pollyâs face but catching the shock flashing across Michaelâs. âSorry, anythinâ and everythinâ gets the tears flowinâ.â
John wasnât shocked, âCried over some flowers dyinâ didnât you Edie?â
âWatch it,â Tommy warned, rubbing a hand over her back as she wiped her tears.
âLast week it was a candle blowinâ out.â
âAnd next time itâll be a knife in your face,â Eden snapped, groaning at their laughter.
Michael was startled by the threat.
âThereâs my girl,â Tommy pressed a kiss to her cheek before she pushed him away. âPol, can you boil the kettle,â he noted the pot of tea was bare as were the cups.
Polly nodded, knowing how much Eden drank during her first pregnancy, her second was even worse.
Michael gulped, although no one apart from Tommy caught it. The teen lowered himself into a seat as his mother scolded his cousins for their poor habits, claiming she didnât want him to mirror them.
âYou should meet Isaiah, heâs around your age Michael,â Eden said, sending a look toward Tommy. âItâll be good for you to make a friend.â
Michael nodded, listening to whatever advise he could take. His eyes darted between Eden, trying not to get caught looking at her too much, and so he would look toward his cousin Tommy, who stroked her large bump. Shortly after his mum returned with a cup and the steaming kettle fresh from the fire.
He occasionally heard the mumbles from his other two cousins â Finn and Ada, he hadnât met yet â John and Arthur snickered off to the side, still stood up as if they were waiting to leave.
â⊠friends, whatâs the point? They might end up like Eden and Grace,â Arthur whispered, quite harshly to his younger brother.
Johnâs mood soured at the mention, âThat bloody barmaid.â
They knew not to mention Grace around Eden. Their sister-in-law fought she found a friend ever since Enzo and Martha passed and Dorris moved to London, but was a huge mistake. The Irish Womanâs betrayal caused the hole in Edenâs heart to grow as did her paranoia.
Tommy felt he shouldâve protected her more, but he trusted Grace as a friend, especially since he didnât have many female friends. But it costed him a bullet to the shoulder.
Even with Lizzie, Esme and Dorris from a far he was wary about everyone who surrounded the family, even if they were family.
Tommy was constantly thinking. Always.
âThat wonât happen with Michael. Isaiah is loyal, youâve seen him, Eden practically raised the boy,â John said quietly. âHeâs Jimmyâs son.â
âI ainât worried, we just have to be careful, not everyoneâs a friend alright,â Arthur muttered, knowing that Isaiah wasnât the one he didnât trust.
âBut family is family.â
The two broke apart to see Tommy right behind them. They didnât even hear him move.
âFuck, Tom,â John cursed, eyeing him.
âKeep your bloody trousers on,â Tommy scoffed, âyou ready to go?â
ââCourse Tom,â Arthur nodded, shoving John forward, âyou need to wear a fuckinâ bell on ya.â
âYeah, alright.â Tommy smirked, then turned back to to the table, to see Eden sipping on some tea with a pensive look on her face. He pressed a kiss to her head as he stared at his Aunt, âMake sure he treats my Edie well, Pol.â
âGet goinâ,â Eden playfully shoved Tommy away just as he gave her a chaste kiss on the lips.
âDonât worry Michael, weâll be back to show you, whatâs what,â John grinned.
Polly gasped, âYouâll do no such thing!â
âLetâs leave âem boys,â Arthur said, âWouldnât wanna ruin the tea party.â
That had John snickering.
Michael smiled, watching as Tommy scanned Eden again.
The pregnant woman waved at him, âBye, my love.â
âDarlinâ, stay safe,â Tommy didnât want to leave her for too long. âThe both of you, alright.â He was pulled away by his brothers as he nodded at the mother-son duo, âPol, Michael.â
When the door slammed shut behind them, Michael coyly smiled at his mum.
âThey seem nice.â
Eden and Polly laughed.
The latter spoke, âTheyâre anythinâ but.â
Eden agreed, âBut theyâre your family, so get used to it.â

âWhat is it? Whatâs wrong you had everythinâ fuckinâ planned.â Eden stressed, after being told they had been betrayed.
Ada had left the room, with baby Karl and an anxious Inara in tow, whilst Eden and Tommy stayed. The Dawkins woman watched as he paced, gulping and tugging at the roots of his hair, wanting to say something but couldnât spit it out.
Black Star Day was their day. It was planned, everything was going according to plan, and Tommy said so. Prayers had been said, drinks had been poured, and Eden and her newfound friend Grace even chatted, buzzing about it all.
But it went to hell when Jeremiah informed Arthur that Billy Kimber was spotted, with an army full of fuckers rallying behind him. There was no God in Small Heath. With every War that ended, another started up.
âIt was Grace,â Tommy finally blurted.
Eden froze, face full of confusion, âWhat was Grace?â
âWeâve been fuckinâ betrayed.â
Tommy had been so stuck on the why, he didnât focus on the how, how the Irish Barmaid they befriended so quickly could accomplish all of this in such a small frame.
âNo,â Eden, of course refused to believe it.
And just like that, she began to pace and he watched, observed with a pained expression as she struggled to come to terms with the truth.
âEden,â Tommy exclaimed.
âNo, sheâs our friend remember,â Eden gesticulated. âShe was in the Garrison, fuckinâ seconds ago, pouring pints, celebrating with us all.â
Tommy breathed out, more steadier than before, âShe gave us away.â
His voice was calm but he was anything but. He had to keep it together, for her. For his Edie, who was on the verge of spiralling.
Eden gulped as her heels slammed against the floorboards, creaking and cracking.
âYou said we could trust her,â she whispered, but he heard.
It was like shrapnel to his chest.
You were wrong Tom, was what she meant. You didnât think.
âI know,â Tommy nodded, standing still, silently raging.
She turned to him, gritted her teeth, âYou said we could trust her Thomas.â
He shut his eyes, âDonât you think I don't fuckinâ know that.â
âYou said we could fuckinâ trust her!â
Eden wrung out her numb hands as she choked back a sob. All that happened, all that has been going wrong since that fucking inspector came to their city, their town of Small Heath. She felt the work of a wretched soul at play but she didnât expect to think it would come from such a nice girl like Grace.
HuhâŠ
Nice, she certainly pulled the wool over their fucking eyes.
Eden had just felt so lonely, Tommy had returned home from the war and her best friends were either dead or in London. She needed someone other than her husband to speak to, preferably anyone without the last name Shelby. And there Grace was, singing her way into the Garrison with her soft and trusting voice.
Oh, how they were wrong.
Edenâs face scrunched up as Tommyâs eyes quickly opened having heard her shuddering breaths.
You said we could fuckinâ trust her. Tommy had his suspicions. He knew the barmaid lied about where she came from and why she moved. He didnât trust her at first but his wife did. He too, missed the comfort of a friend. Freddie wasnât one anymore, not after the war, they were on two different paths, racing like trains that wouldnât come to a halt at any time soon. His other good friend was dead and had been for years. The war took more from him than he thought and his little âNara was the light of his life, his Edie was his heart. But Grace⊠she was something new, something calm that settled both him and his wife. An outsider, a new friend.
Oh, how she played them for a fool.
âSheâs the reason why âNara was almost taken,â Edenâs glossy eyes darted to him, as he stood there in shock. âThat fuckinâ inspector tried clawing our daughter out of our hands. For dirty dealinâ Moss said. He got the fuckinâ social on us, claimed that we were a pack of animals.â Eden remembered it all like it was just yesterday. âBut they â they trashed our houses, turned it all into a tip, framinâ us like we did it all and they tried⊠oh Tom they scared us good they did. They scared our little girl even more.â
Tommyâs jaw clenched, recalling the day, hearing his daughterâs screeches and his wifeâs wails⊠Christ, they were louder than the shovels against the wall. Pat. Pat. Pat. He almost wasn't there to stop it. They claimed that Eden was too erratic, too primitive to look after a child like theirs. Daddy! Inaraâs shaken voice will always stay with them.
Being dragged and kicked back to that day, neither parent saw or heard Polly enter the room, full of grief and torment.
The Shelby Matriarch's stomach dropped once more, it scarred her brain just like it did when her children were taken from her.
Eden rasped, âI need to see her.â
âNo, no you wonât.â Polly shook her head, âI'll deal with Grace. If either one of you set eyes on her again, you might kill her.â
Eden hung onto that blissful thought.
When Polly left, Tommy turned to his wife, sighing when she gripped her Black Madonna.
âI thought we could trust her,â Eden wanted to cry.
She wanted to scream, stab, shoot, fuck anything.
âI know love. I know,â Tommy slowly nodded.
The two exchanged a dark look, one that read, that theyâll talk later.
âTommy?â
âYeah.â
âPlease be safe.â
And with that Tommy raced out of the house, needing to end this all one and for all.

If I ever wrote the canon plot, Tommy wouldnât cheat on Eden, but because of who he is he would do other things to fuck up their relationship.
In this though both trusted Grace as a friend because of how they lost friends in my headcanon
"YOU'VEÂ got a what?" Finn asked, the expecting couple.
Isaiah's gasped, "In where?"
Days had passed since the celebratory drink in honour of another Shelby baby and the boys were still confused about all of it, so Tommy and Eden pulled them aside from their learnings to explain as much as possible, considering he and his brothers would be leaving in very soon.
"How is a baby in there?" Isaiah turned to his best friend.
"Sex," Finn answered, despite not knowing what he was saying.
The couple looks at each other in shock watching the two interact.
"How does he..." Eden was too stunned so Tommy took over.
"Boys, Eden's got a baby in her tummy, just like Martha did â"
"-- she might again," Eden mumbled, luckily only Tommy heard but she gave him an 'I'll tell you later'Â look and he continued.
"The baby will come when I'm not here, so you two need to be on your best behaviour," Tommy instructed, leaning down as they stared up at him with their innocent faces, "no messin' around, no gettin' on her nerves, just be good, alright?"
His words went straight over their heads, "Does that mean I still get sweets?" Finn asked no one in particular.
Tommy pinched the bridge of his nose, "Finn you've been told you're gonna be an uncle for the second time and you're worrying about sweets."
The Shelby boy awaited an answer.
"Yes, you'll get sweets Finny and another niece," Eden reassured him.
His brows pinched together, "What's that?"
Finn understood that he was an uncle but nothing more than that.
"Is it a girl?" Isaiah questioned, folding his arms, when he received a nod, the boys exchanged grimaces, "Ewww."
Immediately they ran off and went back to their books, leaving the couple alone.
"What the fuck?" Eden blinked rapidly.
Tommy took her hand, before palming her stomach once again.
"Now that's done, let's go," he said, nodding to the basket on the floor.
"But what's up with 'em?"
"Fuck knows."
__
Two days, the lads were leaving in two days. Tommy's heart hammered in his chest at the thought, nevertheless, he promised Eden a perfect day, filled with chocolate slices, sandwiches and a flask of tea. She wore the sweetest frock she could dig out of her closet, it was cheery red, matching the colour of her lips. He adorned a crease-free shirt which was concealed by his favourite navy blue jumper, his shoes were polished, and the gifted horseshoe and box were in his slacks.
Despite not carrying his gun with him, he decided the blades in his cap would suffice and along with the knife he knew that clung to Eden's thigh, they would be safe.
They rode Shadow once again, this time Eden was much more relaxed and free, the light wind combed through Tommy's hair and luckily didn't move a strand of hers, being that she styled it into a low bun.
After tying the horse to a nearby tree, they found the spot overlooked the city, allowing them to spread out the blanket and sit down, basking in the heat.
The sun felt like hot kisses against Eden's skin, leaving her with tints of amber, drawing Tommy's attention as he pulled out all the food he'd spent making up that morning. She was everything he dreamt of and more, the very thing that he yearned for in both body and spirit, she challenged him in ways he hated to love and often drove him to madness, but brought him back with only the right sequence of words. Eden bloody Dawkins, she was his home.
"What?" she felt his stare.
Tommy simply cocked his head to the side, raising his brow at her as a smile tugged at his lips.
"Aren't I simply a dream Tom?" she teased, winking at the man.
"That you are my love."
Eden bashfully laughed at his response and started to dig into the spread, she carved anything and everything, the previous night she'd woken up Tommy so he could make her some rose tea, he didn't have a clue of what she was on about and cautiously told his aunt about it. Polly wasn't pleased with being pulled out of her slumber but aided him anyway.
"How's the little one treatin' ya?" he gently palmed the slight swell of her stomach.
"Can't feel much, bumps don't show properly for another two months," when you're away, she wanted to add, but decided not to, "nausea's died down for now."
"Can see that," he nodded to a half-eaten sandwich in her hand, making her snort.
"And you can say it's a girl, Tom unless you don't believe your aunt," she gave him a pointed look.
"I believe her, things might change, just being realistic."
"'Cause you want a boy?"
"Did I say that?" his hand didn't leave her stomach as he picked up the flask.
"Y'know she's a girl, so you're not havin' a peaky blinder," she narrowed her eyes at him, "but by the grace of god, we have a boy he ain't becomin' a blinder Thomas alright? Promise me." he shrugged, making her hit his forehead, "You promised a perfect day so promise me."
He nodded after gulping down some tea, "Alright, I promise... if it's a boy he ain't becoming a blinder," he paused, "I'll make sure he goes to London and becomes one of those established toffs."
She scrunched up her face, "Ugh, I think I'd prefer a blinder."
They both started to laugh, but in truth wanted a bright future for their child, their children, not wanting them to be subjected to the same misfortunes they inherited, but it was a lot to ask for, let alone dream about. Money could change a lot, but it couldn't change blood.
"You thought of any names?" she asked, as he rested his head in her lap.
His eyes fluttered shut, "A few."
She gently patted him, "Spill."
He inhaled sharply, "It's a lot to ask..."
"Go on."
"Somethin' to do with my mum," his reply had her intrigued.
"Mara Shelby," he stiffly nodded at her mention, "it's a pretty name," she said smiling.
"Esme too," he added, recalling how he and John were up a couple of nights ago talking about it. Arthur joined in, and so did Ada before they passed out in the front room.
"Esmerelda," she liked how it rolled off her tongue.
He chuckled before saying the next, "Pollyanna, but don't tell Pol 'bout that."
"Secret safe with me," she giggled.
"You thought of any?"
"Nothing's come to mind, none have felt right, my mum told me that she spent months thinkin' of what to call me and then changed her mind on the day," she said, combing her hand through his thick locks.
"Really?"
"Yeah, spontaneous thing right?"
"Sounds it," as a man who made part of their child, he didn't want to influence Eden too much with the name of the baby, but the fact she was taking his input made him grateful.
"Just picturing the little girl, runnin' 'round, with a dog chasing her..." her eyes fluttered shut at the image.
"A dog, what one?" he questioned, envisioning the image also, it made his heart swell.
"Bullmastiff," she breathed out.
His eyes fluttered open. "Those big dogs?"
"Yeah, family dogs apparently, but can be brutal when needs be," she continued with the vision, believing it would be the perfect addition to the home they already dreamt of.
"Ballmastiff it is, anything else Mrs Shelby?" and with that question her eyes snapped open, glancing down at the smirking man.
She swallowed the lump at the back of her throat, "Not Mrs. Shelby yet, haven't even popped the question."
"That's true," Tommy sat up, then rose on one knee, rendering Eden to softly chuckle behind her shaking hand, "Now, I was gonna do this a while ago, back when I got permission from your parents. And yes even your dad gave me 'is blessin', a shock to me and all, but I promised I wasn't gonna fuck this up, and I'm not am I?"
"No, you aren't, keep it up."
"Been thinkin' of all the ways I was gonna ask you this, dreamin', talkin' talk my self 'bout how I was gonna ask you to be my wife, did it so often Pol thought 'bout 'avin' me admitted," a teary laugh escaped her at his confession. "So I thought what would my Edie do when she's stuck? She'd write it down wouldn't ya love?"
"I would," she admitted.
"But I couldn't do that," he jokily tutted, making her laugh even more, "I scrapped the paper and thought speakin' from the heart was better, even though I think I'm doin' a crap job at it, but you're smilin'" her smile reached her teary eyes, making his heart hammer once more, "best smile I've ever seen, the brightest too," his voice cracked slightly, "and a great woman once said 'you have to be a bright ball of fire to be seen'Â and I've never not seen you, Eden. You're everything to me, my bright ball of hope, Christ how sappy is that?"
"Keep goin'" She softly nudged him, despite her tears.
"Oh right," he reached into his back pocket, "even before that little one starting growin' inside you, I was gonna propose. We speak about the future and mine wouldn't be right â it couldn't be without you in it. You've always been in it, so Eden Mary Dawkins would you â"
"Yes," she practically fell into his arms, covering his face with kisses.
"Darlin' I 'aven't shown you the ring yet or properly asked the question."
"Fine, ask me," she playfully rolled her eyes, not letting go of him.
"Will you marry me?"
"Yes, it was always gonna be yes," she exclaimed.
An uncharacteristically wide smile broke out on his face as he produced a small box, but that didn't stop her from kissing him and he immediately kissed back, flooding her with feelings that burst through his chest and she did the same, swirling his mouth with the joy that took over her.
Pulling away, he presented her with a ring, that she squealed out, much to his shock, sure it shone in the sunlight, but he didn't think it was much, in honesty he thought she would hate it, but it was the best he could do.
"Brought it for cheap, don't be mad," he said, settling down onto the blanket again.
Her brows furrowed slightly, "And why would I be mad?"
"You deserved better."
"It's perfect," she wasted no more time and slid it onto her finger.
She even laughed when he fitted his cap onto her head.
My secret blinder, he thought.
She wouldn't stop looking at the ring, so he took his time to speak again, "I want us to have the best weddin', but can't do it now only when I come back, so promise me you'll tell people we're married."
"For protection?..."
"Exactly, protection, our little Shelby needs it, just like you," he and his family agreed to it as well, making sure to spread the word that they'd wed, so no one questioned it. Even asking Jeremiah to pretend he performed the ceremony and Polly to put together a fake marriage certificate.
"'Course," she smiled at him, watching as he slipped on a wedding band of his own. "Should we make up our own vows then?"
"If you want," he couldn't stop smiling.
"Well, I... promise to be loyal to you, always, mind body and soul."
He let out a nervous chuckle, "Not to love ey?"
"You can love someone and hurt 'em right?" she blurted out, eyes widening at the words she spoke. It was out of experience she wanted to be cautious, she loved Tommy and he loved her, but the future they planned wouldn't be plane sailing. "I promise to always love you, also, but loyalty, our loyalty to each other can't be brought, or made, it was always there, alright?"
Tommy couldn't disagree despite himself.
"I promise to be loyal to you, always, mind body and soul."
They sealed that vow with a kiss, arguably far more meaningful and sacred than the last.
He was about to go through the flames of war, but right now all he could think of was his family, and how he would make sure to cherish them, despite how little time he had.
for a while, i was trying to figure out how far along eden is and she's roughly two months pregnant, give or take a week.
we all know when it comes to tommy loyalty is more vital than love, merely because he's committed atrocities in the name of love and family, so he's really not one to be trusted.
