After Chuck Dixon introduced the Birds of Prey and their own publication in 1999, by issue 56 in 2003 Gail Simone became the main writer on the series. In an interview with Mania.com, Simone discussed her admiration for the Oracle character: “Kim Yale and John Ostrander picked up the character and made her into a brilliant master computer operator and one of the most fascinating characters in comics. From there, Chuck Dixon did wonderful things with her in his Birds of Prey run …she’s fantastic because even just sitting in a chair in a dark room by herself, she’s tremendously compelling. The DCU without her would be a much less interesting place.” When Gail Simone began writing Birds of Prey, she added another permanent figure to the heroine team: Helena Bertinelli aka Huntress. Her first arc was in Birds of Prey (Vol 1) 56-59 illustrated by Ed Benes and Alex Lei. In “Of Like Minds”, when Black Canary falls into a trap of an evil computer hacker named Savant, Barbara discovers this is all a plan to get Batman’s secret identity from Oracle if she doesn’t comply with his ransom demands. To aid in getting to Canary, Oracle calls upon Huntress and she arrives to do battle with Savant’s sidekick Creote. In the end Canary gets herself free by loosening her constraints, fights alongside Huntress and both Savant and Creote are apprehended. Despite going through differences along the way, this heroine trio of Huntress, Oracle and Black Canary (cover to issue 59 by Benes and Lei presented) would set the stage for this and future incarnations of the Birds of Prey.
