Think, theory:
Belos is a (greater) Basilisk
Philip was the only human (before Luz) to ever be on the Boiling Isles and have the witches know about it
Philip’s brother was never mentioned by Gwendolyn or anywhere else or whatever because he came onto the Boiling Isles (to no one’s knowledge) and was killed by the Basilisk
Basilisk!Belos actually killed Philip after he donated his journal to the library, and then took his identity to avoid extinction (this is based on the idea that Basilisks were hunted (see: TTLGR) for some reason and they were hunted to the point of extinction. Basilisk!Belos avoids being hunted by assuming Philip’s identity). When transformed, he altered his ears so he could appear more like a witch
Sometime after Belos assumes Philip’s appearance, Philip’s brother comes through to the Isles somehow, looking for Philip. He finds the Basilisk and finds out about what happens. He tries to kill the Basilisk for revenge I guess, but ends up getting himself killed. Sometime after this, the Basilisk uses his body to create a grimwalker, Hunter
One main reason why Belos could be a Basilisk: he absorbs the palismen magic the same way Vee and other shown Basilisks absorb the magic from witches and magical items
My other theory: the reason Belos has that goo form is because originally he’s a Basilisk, but he stays in his Belos form for so long that he ends up losing sight of what and who he really is, so the goo form is essentially his body trying to figure out what he really is. A human, or a Basilisk. But Belos tells Hunter that the goo form is a result of a curse that was placed on him by wild magic
The point above raises the question: what about his alleged curse? Well, think about this. Basilisks are harmed by glyph magic, which is considered wild magic. In order to avoid glyphs, Belos claims Wild Magic to be bad and shouldn’t exist. It’s why he’s trying to get rid of all the wild witches and their ways, so he won’t be able to be stopped. It’s why he won’t let Hunter learn about it, even through his good intentions.

please continue to draw puffball facial hair its one of those things i didnt realize id never seen anyone do until i saw it for the first time (which is kinda weird considering how many meta gajinkas have facial hair? more people should give that borb whiskers)
Always man 🫡 I actually got the idea from @imelht own art and fic, and I loved it so much that I adapted it in my own art.
Personally I headcanon that puffballs are normally smooth, no fur or hair, but Meta is an outlier in that he's not 'pure'. I imagine he was modified, mutated, by dark forces, making him more animal-like. He can't use copy abilities or inhale like Kirby because he lost the ability when he was mutated.
