this is random and not connected to me in any way BUT i think ectrodactyly needs some good rep in media, all they have rn is tim burton penguin and anne hathaway evil witch.. and idk true crime docs on the lobster boy murderer?
if the powers that be just listened to me and made a mikhail tal movie..
or idk give maya scarlette more photoshoots, i like her
the witches 2020 is like no no the antisemitic subtext is not enough we need to give the villain ectrodactyly??
and that wasnt in the original, which actually had one of the protagonists (the grandma) w a missing finger..Â
#TeratologyChallenge day 3: Ectrodactyly
The prompt text is âmirror images of hands or feetâ but ectrodactyly is technically loss of middle digits. Iâm going with the description instead of the real definition, because artificially inducing a mirrored hand was one of the coolest experiments in developmental biology!
If you think about it, embryonic development is an insane process. This whole drawing challenge is about what happens when things go wrong, but think about how rare that is. Why? What is it that lets such complicated patterns form so reliably? In the early days of developmental biology, people figured out that transplanting certain specific patches of cells could cause limbs or structures to form where they usually donât. Note, however, that this doesnât distinguish between some kind of chemical signal and the possibility that the fate of each cell is predetermined somehow.
This experiment involved soaking a bead in a protein usually produced only on the back edge of a chickâs wing bud, and implanting it in the front edge. This resulted in a perfect mirror of the last segment of the wing. No cells are moved or harmed. The protein in the bead changed the fate of the cells around it. This proved that embryonic development is NOT hard-coded, but rather controlled by signal molecules the cells produce as they go.
Bonus round: you know how people meme about Sonic Hedgehog (shh) as an example of silly protein names? Thatâs what was on the bead.
Teratology challenge, ectrodactyly.

The first time I used an anaglyph in one of my own compositions, it appeared at the feet of âThe Clawâ [2005]; one of the performers in the âSmoke and Mirrorsâ project.
The Claw: oil on canvas  122x 91cm
I have used an anamorphic portrait here in the âLandscapes of Betrayalâ as a way of visually representing Winston Smithâs gradual realisation what Room 101 Holds in store for him⊠By moving from a central position in front of the artwork to the designated point of view at the left edge of the drawing, a confusion of half grasped visual information slowly morphs into a screaming face.

It has been pointed out that the anaglyph portrait might be seen to represent Big Brother himself, rather than, or as well as Winston Smith. Because of its distortion, the portrait observes the viewer BEFORE its discovery from the designated p.o.v.

After finally getting a job I like, I broke my foot less than 8 months after starting. Right now, medical debt is kicking my butt, but filing bankruptcy isn't an option for me. Also, I have to pay something each ortho visit to keep being allowed to go. I'm trying to get these medical bills under control and take care of my family. My doc doesn't want me walking more than I have to, as my foot is healing too slowly. Please donate and/or signal boost for me. Even $5 or $10 helps because that can cover meds or even feeding my kids. Thanx!
Ya know, when life gives you lemons, throw them hoes at people who piss you off and be happy! * * * #Disability #Optimism #Ectrodactyly #KeepOnTruckin (at Memphis, Tennessee)
