Everyone that works should be allowed access to sick leave. Our modern society is made up of many positions that bring us our modern conveniences.
It is unconscionable that the richest families in this country have convinced legislatures and regulators that some jobs deserve slave pay, zero respect and no PTO (Paid Time Off).
Many of these people serve our food, stock our stores and work our registers. It is insane that they are forced to come in ill because the highest paid at the business refused to organize their business properly. This is completely immoral and utterly backwards from a public health standpoint.
My grandparents generation was the last where you could participate in the upper economy as long as you worked hard. Two generations later that equivalent middle class job makes 30% less and there is no guarantee of health insurance or PTO. The world the next generation will enter is fast approaching making half their great grandparents generation did and this is unacceptable.
When exactly did our country become 'all for me and none for you'?
Where someone demanding another dollar or two an hour is criticized and ridiculed but the wealthy taking in another 100 million and we hear applause.
Where we define success and hard work by the measure of wealth alone.
When exactly did the 'Merica Dream be only for the 'Merican business owner on the backs of the 'Merican employee?
I know single parents working several part time minimum wage server jobs to make ends meet, and often make less after their 6-7 day work week than most managers I know by their first sh*t at the office on Tuesday.
Due to the heavy lobbying by the 1% richest families that make up restaurant industry have exploited our nations citizens for decades. Here is an excellent article surrounding the lies and deceit surrounding the other NRA (http://goo.gl/s64vAW). Often getting payed barely enough to cover the state and federal taxes, and without tips they often bring home nothing.
Paying well, and giving respect is not a difficult task. They threaten us with skyrocketing prices for goods and services. All smoke and mirrors.
Many of the worst offenders like Walmart sell a lot of products . When you sell hundreds of millions of something and your store has thousands of things an increase in unit price in the penny range can bring in hundreds of millions in revenue and go largely unnoticed by the consumer.
It's easy. you sell a billion things. you charge 10 cents more a unit. that brings in hundred million dollars more a year. Granted this is over simplifying, but the threats of things going through the rough is just lies. Here is a link to the Huffington Post article outlining how you probably wouldn't even notice what could be done to bring all their floor staff up to full time and paid a living wage ( http://goo.gl/Ix9qGx ).
This goes for almost the entire service industry. Fast food sells billions of meals a year. I would gladly pay a dollar more a meal, even though a few cents would be enough, knowing that the person on the other side is not on welfare, is making a living for a service that is obviously in demand, and not forced to work with the flu around food just to make rent.
Beyond the respect and keeping sick people at home, more money for the majority of the employed will feed back into the economy. Which means more money all around.
We need an #EconomicTerrorist Czar to go after these horrible corporations that have no allegiance to any country and do nothing but vacuum up a nations wealth into very few hands.
