Gamil Rodrigue Liess Gharbi (Known by the name Marc Lépine) was born on October 26, 1964 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He had 2 parents, Rachid Gharbi (father) and Monique Lépine (mother) who divorced in 1976, when he was 7 years old. His family moved a lot, including living in Puerto Rico and Costa Rica, but eventually settled back in Montreal. His father was abusive and hated women. He lived with his mother only on the weekends, during the week he lived with other families. He had a younger sister named Nadia Gharbi. This did not help him, it only caused him to become more withdrawn. Other than the fact he struggled with getting along with others, he was described pretty positively. His father rarely visited him. He learned how to hunt as a child.
At 14, he changed his name to Marc Lépine because he did not like his father. He took his mother's last name officially. He was also bullied for his name.
He attempted to join the Military, which he was rejected. He instead attended college. Once for science, then once for technology, then one last time for computer programming. He never completed a single course. He applied to the École polytechnique de Montréal and he was allowed to join upon completing two courses, but he was ultimately denied. Marc was not stupid, he had average and above average grades in school. He moved.
He had a job at a hospital, which he was fired from. He worked in the kitchen. This happened in 1987.
Lépine disliked feminism a lot.
Lépine obtained his gun permit in 1989 and bought a Ruger mini 14 semi automatic rifle on november 21st.
He bought his mom a present before the attack. He kept a suicide note in his jacket pocket that blamed feminism for everything. He also had a list of women he wanted dead and a note to a friend.
The attack:
It was later in the school day, around 1 pm, when Mark Lépine entered the Polytechnique. He waited around until about 5:40 pm. He went into an engineering classroom and shot the women in the class. He called them all feminists. He had separated the men and women and then told the men to leave. He then asked if the women knew what was happening. He tells them “I am fighting feminism.” before he began to shoot them. He then left the classroom and began to shoot at any women he saw. He killed 14 women in total. Marc said “oh shit” and then suicide. after the attack, Lépine's sister and a victims 4 family members commited suicide aswell.
